Flashpoint ignites New York Watch list

While FLASHPOINT (Pomeroy) may not always be the best behaved colt, he certainly has speed, which he demonstrated on Saturday with a sharp debut victory in the 3RD race at Aqueduct.

This horse was super impressive, but he's pure sprinter.

I love that every blurb I see about him mentions his cantankerous nature. It's good to know he hasn't changed a bit. Hopefully he stays safe and sound.

Flashpoint just toyed with the horses in his race today and made the win look so easy. But my question is can he stretch out further and get the derby distance?

Yes, a son of Pomeroy, out of a Two Punch mare, is going to excel at 10f. Brilliant. May I reiterate that I'm the drunk one here. You might be too, though.

If Dutrow pushes this horse to the Florida Derby, it'll be Radiohead Round II.

    From the DRF:

Flashpoint, by Pomeroy and out of the Two Punch mare Two Punch Lil, fetched $100,000 as a yearling at the Keeneland September sale of 2009. While bred more along the lines of a one-turn horse, he finished well Saturday, and Dutrow said he would consider the Florida Derby, if not another race at Gulfstream, for Flashpoint's next start.

"He kind of took your breath away in both starts," said Dutrow. "He won today like he wants to go long. Right now at least we can think and dream about the [Kentucky] Derby."

He was the fastest horse at GP today. If they are thinking of trying the Derby, stamina will be the question as Pomeroy and Two Punch Lil don't inspire confidence, but their damsire's aren't bad. (Seeking the Gold and Secretariat.)

    102 Beyer for Flashpoint.

Loved his training pattern going into the race-

Worked 6 furlongs under some urging on 2/19.

Blew out 3 furlongs the day before the Hutcheson.

I love the horse, but I really don't see him being a 9 and 10 furlong horse.

Can't fault the connections for at least giving him a 9 furlong shot in the Florida Derby as there aren't a lot of great options for him the next couple of months (What would trouncing a four horse field, for 150k, in the Swale on the FL Derby undercard do for him?).

But I think after the Florida Derby (where I predict he'll run well but tire at the end and wind up third or something) that plan B might be to target the Met Mile. That distance should be well within his scope and really good 3yo's used to do well in the Met Mile as they get a nice break in the weights. No Quality Road's out there this year to face in the Met Mile I don't think.

Maybe one start in June or July (at Belmont or Monmouth - or possibly ship to Calder for the Carry Back on the Summit Of Speed card) and then go into Saratoga with a fresh horse and the G.1 King's Bishop should be a nice target there.

Will be nice for racing if The Factor also makes it to the G.1 King's Bishop (incidentally the connections of The Factor are also taking a two turn shot next out - although against much, much weaker company). Like Flashpoint I don't see The Factor as a 9 or 10 furlong horse either.

The owner of this horse was just interviewed by HRTV. Previous to John Fort, they chatted with Todd Pletcher.

For those who are into the Derby picture, you should have been tuned in.

I was doing something else so not really paying attention to "the noise in the background", but Fort suggested that Gulfstream add a little extra money to the Swale, and that Flashpoint and The Factor run it. Baffert trains for Peachtree Stables too ... so he was just kind of tossing that out there. Thought fans might be interested in something like that. Didn't sound like he thought either horse was going to be a real Derby threat.

To another thread, Pletcher ran through where all his horses are headed. Again, I wasn't glued to the TV, but he did talk about Mo, Brethren, Cal Nation, Stay Thirsty.

Saturday and Sunday mornings on HRTV are usually filled with interviews from both Coasts. I don't care about the Derby yet but for those who do, they have good programming from about 11 a.m. on.

I know it would never happen (And how often does Baffert ship to Gulfstream?) but that would be an awfully tantalizing match-up...

Pomeroy was never tried past 8 furlongs except once in the Ky Cup Juvenile where he ran 3rd. So we dont know how far he wouldve gone. And being out of a Seeking the Gold mare, I think he will produce a horse that can get 9 or 10 furlongs. A race with The Factor and Flashpoint, plus throw in Fort Hughes and Runflatout, will be a great race if it ever comes to fruition.

About as often as John Fort makes sense.

They should get Claiborne to kick in some sponsorship money.

The Swale is named after a Claiborne horse (and I've seen members of the Hancock family down there presenting the trophy for the race before), and the two main attractions we're talking about are a son of a Claiborne stallion (The Factor by War Front) and a son of a Seth Hancock (Cherry Valley) bred stallion who in turn is a son of a former Claiborne stallion (Flashpoint by Pomeroy by Boundary).

Somebody find us a crowbar to try and pry Seth Hancock's wallet out of his pocket.

Actually Pomeroy ran 1st in the Ky Cup Juvenile (1m 1/16). But a claim of foul was lodged by Shane 'crybaby' Sellers, who was on the third place horse The Cliff's Edge, and Pomeroy was DQ'ed to third.

I think it is good that John Fort recognizes a fine sprinter that could win a Gr. 1 for him, and doesn't pretend he is a KY Derby horse any longer than Dutrow makes him do so.

Boundary sired Big Brown and he managed 10F quite nicely; I don't think it's a stretch to think Flashpoint could route, but I think getting him to the Derby is pushing it.
