For the record. i am not a drunk. Just a horseplayer that can spot a horse and make some money.!! but i also have witnessed some of the best horses of the 70s,80, 90s live at the track on the best stage of our game. there was a period of about 18yrs that i will go to the track 4 days a week.i had many favourite horses over the last 37yrs some were great some the best ever some were claimers.Last yr i spotted Afleet Express early and i had to share with all of you. This yi i thought i do the same. i thought thats what this forum is all about.so FLASHPOINT it is.....

I loved Pomeroy as a racehorse and I am thrilled with his success as a sire so far.![]()
"That's all the world is after all, an endless battle of contrasting memories."
Women are like tea bags, you never know how strong they'll be until they're in hot water. -- Eleanor Roosevelt
Performance ultimately overrules pedigree, and while Flashpoint's pedigree makes it unlikely that he'll be able to route, I can't begrudge them for trying based on his performance yesterday. I was really impressed by his tactical speed- laying off a very fast horse only to take over when urged and draw off, in just his second start? Very nice. The Florida Derby is shaping up to be a heck of a race, assuming they go there. And if not, this horse has a brilliant future as a miler.
If anyone was watching HRTV today, you may have heard a little guy who used to ride Pomeroy say he always felt Pomeroy could go further than he ever went, so it sounds like he thought he could go at least 9f. He credited that to the fact that Pomeroy was a horse who would listen to his jockey, saying horses like that often could go longer because of that ability. Perhaps Flashpoint has inherited this. As I mentioned, his parents damsire's were Seeking the Gold and Secretariat. If I owned him, I'd give him a shot in the Florida or Santa Anita Derby. If he folds late, so what, you lose that race and then shorten him up next time.
The Santa Anita Derby could have The Factor, Jaycito, and Sway Away so I actually think both look pretty tough. But if they are seriously considering the Derby, he needs to be able to beat these horses at 9f. I'd give it a shot. Like I said, if he loses, so what? It's one race. If they are not thinking Derby, then obviously The Swale looks like the perfect spot.
Out of curiosity, who's the little guy? At first I was thinking it had to be Stevens, but I pulled Pomeroy's PPs and saw that Stevens had only ridden him in a race once, when he dropped like a rock in the Met Mile, so I'm hoping they were at least interviewing an exercise rider or Prado or something.
I just don't see the rush in pointing for a 9f race for this horse. He's still relatively a baby, he's still raw, he still has no 2yo foundation, he still only has 2 starts to his credit, and he's still not bred to handle 9f. There's absolutely no reason this horse should be pushed along the Derby Trail for the sake of doing it, especially when there are far more logical spots in the immediate future.
Well there's lots of smart ideas in books I've never read, when the girls come talk to me I wish to hell I had
I agree on FP and the owner seems grounded about it, but the Derby is the Derby. We'll start hearing the, "The horse will let us know if he can take us there" line trotted out by Wednesday.
You'd think Dutrow would have learned last year, when in the span of a few weeks he essentially ruined Radiohead and Homeboykris. If nothing else, that was an impressive butchery of the career's of two horses with some talent in hopes to get his owners a fancy box on Derby Day.
I just think they're too far behind the 8-ball to really and legitimately forge a path to the Derby. And really, the Preakness is pushing it as well. Take the smart route, hop from the Swale to the Woody Stephens and then make an assault on the Jim Dandy, or something.

I might try on the FL Derby if he gets a good draw - it would be hard to not. But then if he runs well they won't be able to help themselves and will ruin him in the Derby.
I'd point him to the Met Mile. And/or the King's Bishop at Saratoga.
I'm not sure Flashpoint can WIN the Florida Derby - but I AM confident that he could make Soldat LOSE the Florida Derby.
A Flashpoint pace in the Florida Derby isn't something that Soldat wants to sit close to if he's going to be around at the finish.
McLaughlin seems to agree with you.
“The race shape turned out to be just what we figured it would be, even though he didn’t break great,” McLaughlin said. “As a handicapper, we had to go to the lead in this one. Obviously, there will be a few new horses in the Florida Derby, and we know if someone like that horse who won the Hutcheson [Flashpoint] goes in there we won’t be in front. The only thing we really haven’t done much of with him is sit behind the pace, but we have five weeks to work on that. I might have him practice in the morning and put him behind horses in a workout to see how he handles it.”
You know Nick Zito would love to see Flashpoint and Soldat both in the Florida Derby.
Would set things up nicely for his closer Dialed In.
One thing with Flashpoint is that his owner Peachtree Stable has never been afraid to sell a horse if somebody throws a big number at them, so it'll be interesting to see if he stays a Peachtree horse.
Soldat cant keep up with Flashpoint.
