Nah ... I didn't really think you were Curlin ... I was just clarifying that I wasn't picking him to win The Derby off of one race. You know how people here are ... If he didn't get there and win The Derby, there would be some here calling me out and saying I predicted he would ... When I actually didn't.
I have no idea what he'd be like as far as distance ofr if he's even consistent. In person, he seemed like a pretty small horse. I tend to like bigger, stronger horses when we're talking of routers. Such as my boy Wegner. He's much bigger than most 3 year olds I've seen out here and built like a tank. He doesn't seem to have any distance limitations thus far either ... But that being said, it's still too early in the game for me to predict how he'd do in The Derby. I don't even know if he's even being aimed there. He DOES only have 1 win thus far although several of his races have been quite impressive.
I'll come out with my pick as it gets closer. It's FAR too far out for me to have a strong idea yet.
I do have to admit though, that leaving my boy Wegner out of the Top 100 even thus far ... Is not cool.
When he romps next time out, they'll notice him and give him some respect. I think the kid is getting better each time out.
Whether he's an actual Derby horse or not, I don't know ... I'm just lobbying to get him in the Top 100 as a start!!![]()
Live life, don't just exist it!
Oh, the famous Apollo in 1882. I wish one would go ahead and do it so they would stop talking about Apollo (no disrespect to him) every year.
From Wikipedia: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_%28horse%29)
There's an interesting link at the bottom of this Wikipedia page, which goes to a 1910 DRF article about the later years of past Kentucky Derby winners. The startling one was Typhoon II (1897 winner) who "was gelded in his older years and sold to a huckster, who, at last accounts, was daily driving him on the streets in Indianapolis, Ind."Apollo (born 1879) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse. He won 24 races in his career, including the 1882 Kentucky Derby.
As of 2010, Apollo is the only horse to win the Kentucky Derby without having raced as a 2-year-old.
Apollo was injured as a five-year old and was retired from racing. He was given to a friend of Morris' wife that lived in Charleston for use as a saddle horse.

P.S. I would love for a horse named Starbuck to win the Kentucky Derby one day, so we could have both Starbuck and Apollo on the green plaques at Churchill. <---- Battlestar Galactica reference. ;-)
