Thread: Are there any true dead closers on dirt that are great sires?

Are there any true dead closers on dirt that are great sires?

I'm curious. I know that there may be some on turf.

But, can anyone think of a true, dead closer on the dirt (meaning a horse that raced in back of pack for almost every single start and never once set the fractions in a win) that turned out to be a good sire (meaning AEI over 1.25 and higher than C.I. with at least 5% stakes winners)?

My memory may be off because I was very young when he raced, but I was thinking that AP Indy was a closer?

    Thanks for your reply!

Nope he won setting all the fast fractions once (very good time) and stalked the pace in a couple others. So, he had it in him to have tactical speed...

Oops! Sorry about that. Well now I know!

Nobody said giving Kirstie Alley a colonic would be easy.

    haha, Jas!!

I have been trying to find someone and Catienus comes to mind but he is not a grade 1 winner (but is placed).

I still haven't found anyone else!!!

    Any other guesses, anyone?

I wonder if closers don't make good sires (judging by the lack of responses) than, perhaps, mares that were closers don't make great broodmares?

Well, how about this.....can anyone think of a good sire that was a dirt closer using the criteria above OR a mare that went on to produce graded black type that
was a pure closer on the dirt?

    Was Honest Lady a closer?

She ran mostly as a closer but I think it was more a tactical race decision where they thought she ran better coming off pace.

In her 2nd lifetime start in the grade 2 Santa Ynez she stalked the pace in a close 2nd with leader going :23 and :45 before she took command at 6 furlongs and setting the fraction of 1:09- finishing in 1:21 for 7 as the winner.

Gotcha. I remembered her as a closer. Perhaps not a Megahertz-style closer. Megahertz is proving your theory so far, though. But only 2 of hers have raced.

    Native Dancer

    Buckpasser?

Haven't looked up stats, but of recent studs, maybe Birdstone would qualify.

Don't know about Native Dancer or Buckpasser being a dead closer in every race.

But, Birdstone broke his maiden taking command at the half mile in :45, then setting the 5/8 fraction in :58 and winning in 1:10 by 12 1/2 lengths....

So, he had tactical speed but they probably just raced him coming off pace.

I know he's fairly young still to be considered anything close to great, but Afleet Alex is turning into a solid sire and I don't remember him ever being close to the pace, although I could be forgetting a race.

Nope. He was often a stalker and even set fractions from the 1/2 mile on while winning the grade 2 Sanford. So, he did have tactical speed.

But, thanks for trying to help me come up with sires!

I ask because I am looking at a closer stallion for one of my mares but can't think of any closers that ever became decent sires.

Not sure he meets all the requirements, but Monarchos comes to mind.

To expand on this... no one I know can come up with a stallion who raced exclusively (perhaps save a race or two) on turf in North America in the past 50 years that became a stallion of any major importance here.

Yet many turf stallions came from Europe to be prominent in Northern America.

He actually showed tactical speed stalking in a couple races and set some fractions breaking his maiden. Plus, he's not that good of a sire but thanks for trying!
