My Dad trys to breed for soundness, and will not under any circumstances breed to an UBS line horse. He's also tries to avoid inbreeding in the first 4 generations. I have a friend who pulls OTTB's off the track for retraining as hunter/jumpers or pleasure mounts and has had issues with UBS horses not being sound enough for anything other then the occasional hack through the woods.
I love looking at UBS's but try to stay away from them. I'd like to avoid inbreeding but sometimes it's just too hard to pass up, and look really good on paper, we try to match them up physically and see if the sire had any major issues while running so for us we did a 4x3 to Mr. P.

That's his theory as well. He makes an attempt to breed to horses that retired sound, but if they did not come off the track sound then he looks to see if he throws sound horses. If he came off the track unsound and he throws unsound horses then it's a no for him.
I don't own my horses, they own me.

The main cemetery is, yes. There is also Marchmont, which is generally not open to visitors though.

I heard they'd changed the policy on Marchmont?

It's another area of Claiborne that has a cemetery where a lot of notables are buried. Danzig, Phipps mares, etc.

Yeah, we ended up going with Nobiz at Darby Dan's instead. I believe I went early afternoon and they knew I was coming. You would think they would want me to get a nice look at the stallion I'm interested in breeding a mare to, but apparently not. And they probably wonder why we went elsewhere.

It just amazes me, no offense to that farm but it's not like they have Giant's Causeway. Pollard's Vision is a nice horse but with that kind of treatment after setting the appointment and calling to double check they had nobody to show us and answer questions. A couple of days later John Greely called and asked if we were going to sign the papers...needless to say we told them we will be looking in a different direction.

When are you expecting your Nobiz baby? I was there to look at Suave and Perfect Soul last year and they ended up pulling out Nobiz and Tale Of Ekati as a bonus. Really nice people at Darby Dan. We were leaning to Suave until he got moved.

Like, if you ask, somebody will probably take you over there. Whereas before, they usually said no.

Why would you have the contract if you weren't set on the horse? And did you tell Greely that your decision hinged on seeing the horse, and you did not feel that you were accommodated?

Our Nobiz is a yearling this year and we ended up going back to Darby Dan's to breed our mare to Sun King for a 2011 foal. Working with them has been great. Ryan even drove up to our farm in Ohio (a good 5 hour drive) one afternoon just to look at our filly, take a few pictures, and see if we had made any decisions about what we wanted to do with her. It's really nice when a farm will make the extra effort, especially when you've been to one that doesn't.

Very interesting MM! I will have to see if they can take me over there. Last year we were there and it was toward the end of the breeding season and War Front had a mating and it was unusually loud and lots of banging around, at one point a couple of the guys that were showing us Arch, had to leave to help out. We got some alone time with Arch which was nice and we saw War Front come out and he was a little bloodied...We knew they had to take care of him so we left early and didn't have time to take pictures of the burial site as they were worried about War Front, later I found out he was ok.

I didn't have the contract, apparently he left it with whoever was suppose to show us around. I told him what happened and he said he would find out what happened with the guy that was suppose to show us and get back to us, he never did. It was kind of strange for him to have a contract set up

If you're really lucky, maybe they'll let you see the pensioned stallions over there.

Ryan is a great guy. He said he is hoping for good things with Sun King, he told me if he had a mare and pedigree wasn't an issue he would go with Sun King.

Just gonna say it. Posting this much info on a message board is not going to endear you to any farm. Especially Claiborne. They probably won't connect any dots or even read this, but I think it is really bad form to repeat an incident like that here.
