Wood generates big increases in attendance, handle

Attendance and on-track handle posted huge gains at Aqueduct Racetrack on Saturday as Toby's Corner (Bellamy Road) provided a stunning upset victory in the $1 million Wood Memorial (G1).

Great to hear. Was there and was impressed with the amount of people there but then realized the grandstand was closed for construction...

Me, too. I had NEVER seen so many people and the parking almost gone-then realized the only part open was the space I usually stand in beyond the finish line so I can get photos of the horses walking over.
Different type crowd-were they really all there to see Mo?

Yes. It seemed to me like they were all there to see Mo. Lots of enthusiasm and tons of people dressed in (orange and blue) Mets outfits. Unless the place just happened to be jammed with Met fans that day...

It did not seem like the typical race track crowd at all to me...

Maybe they were there to see Mo...but they seemed like an atypical group...but then again I usually hang out in the clubhouse...so mixing the grandstand and clubhouse crowds...maybe I'm just that out of touch with who goes to the track...

I saw a lot of young people...

The closing of NYCOTB has helped on site attendance

No, you're right. It was a very different crowd than what normally shows up. It was very nice actually. I'd liken Saturday's crowd to what I would normally see at Belmont for the JCGC if the weather was nice enough.

    That's a good analogy.

I hope they were there for MO. That shows that people are paying attention and perhaps Aqueduct can be a greet success.

I agree it was really nice to see that type of crowd there. But you have to ask yourself - How would all those "regular" people have heard about Mo?.... (that's what was strange to me).

A lot of young people in the crowd walking around with mixed drinks...a little bit different than the usual crowd.

Ugh, seriously, to hell with the Big A. Its not exactly a horse-viewing friendly track and this construction thing meant that EVERY SMOKER in the building was polluting outside, which was beyond disgusting. It was extremely painful to stay thru the whole card.

    Correct.

Since the closing of OTB, daily Aqueduct attendance and handle are both up more than 50 percent.

Comparatively speaking, the Wood numbers followed a pattern, with Mo perhaps bring out some of the more casual fans.

Langfuhr I disagree with you. I think Aqueduct is the best place to watch a race especially when you're in the restaurant. It would be great if they could make the required upgrades on the rest of the track so people don't feel like they're walking into a prison when they go into this place.

It's not the most fan friendly track. The paddock is absolutely terrible for viewing horses and overall I feel pretty limited in the amount I actually get to see them.

A real NY horse would be fantastic for racing. Just a hint of one with Mo had folks excited.

Having said that, closing the NYOTB was the best thing that could have happened to NYRA. It was bleeding away profits and keeping fans from turining out at the track. I can't wait for Belmont and Saratoga. It may actually start to look like the old days again.

At least the construction should be finished by the time Aqueduct opens next Winter.

I completely agree. Not a great track if you actually like to get a look at the horses.
