Thread: Shackleford

    Shackleford

I thought I would just start a thread on Shackleford since there are threads singling out other Derby contenders. I'm probably the only one giving him a legitimate shot at the top spot. But any discussion, pros, cons are more than welcome.

Last race he lost the race but won the pace. And still headed Dialed In after the wire in the gallop out.

    Re: Shackleford

I can see how someone could make a case for him given how the current Derby is shaping up. Of course one must certainly ignore his Fountain of Youth where he was dreadful.

My problem with him is that he just does not seem to be very good. It's not something that is necessarily reflected in the numbers either. His allowance win brought high expectations at the time but Casper's Touch and El Grayling have matured into major disappointments instead of the trendy up and comers they were supposed to be.

Shackleford's main claim is based on his Florida Derby where most of the major contenders failed to show up and he crawled home. In my mind it was not an impressive race at all.

I also consider his breeding to be suspect for 10f.

Anyone is entitled to a shot at this Derby and it would be foolhardy to laugh off anyone's chances but for me Shackleford is not a horse I would put on my short list unless all the other speed withdrew. He just doesn't sit right with me. I strongly suspect that he's not that good at this stage in his career.

He's 21 on the list so he still needs one more deflection to even make the field

I imagine that he'll get in quite comfortably. Jaycito and JP's Gusto will likely withdraw.

Plus you could put money on someone coming out in the last few weeks leading up. Someone always gets injured or is just dull and withdrawn.

And sometimes they'll pull their horse from the Derby, too.

Shackleford will get in. Jaycito isn't running and even if Silver Medallion jumps him he still will get a defection, probably from Uncle Mo or one of the others that doesn't belong. Dialed In would love to see him in there along with The Factor.
KY Derby 1) Midnight Interlude 2) Anthony's Cross 3) 4) Archarcharch 5) Dialed In 6) Toby's Corner 7) Mucho Macho Man 8) Animal Kingdom 9) Watch Me Go 10) Santiva

Now all of the sudden Uncle Mo doesn't belong in the Derby? Sheesh, he's the BCJ, 2 year old champ of last year, was undefeated until the Wood, and finished 3rd in the Wood with an infection and a bleeding hoof...and now he doesn't "belong" in the Derby?

I think he more than belongs, if he is 100% healthy that is. Talent wise, he could still be the best of this crop. At which distances we still do not know for sure.

    Shackleford's strategy seems pretty clear.

Florida Derby runner-up Shackleford broke off just behind Animal Kingdom with exercise rider Tammy Fox aboard and was smoking from the outset, getting his opening quarter and three-eighths in 22.88 and 34.41. Despite the blistering pace, he was able to complete five-eighths in 58.83 and gallop out six furlongs in 1:12.58.

    Re: Shackleford

I have had a feeling that Shackleford would win for the last week or so (though with my track record, that probably doesn't bode well for Shackleford).

Last night, some wrong number called me at midnight, which of course woke me out of a dead slumber in which I was dreaming of the Kentucky Derby. Soldat and Shackleford were battling it out in the last furlong. The phone started ringing just before they reached the wire

    Re: Shackleford

No dream last year. That's actually the first Derby dream I've had.

I had race dreams before all of Zenyatta's races last year except the BC; she won in all those dreams.
