Easy enough - do I need to buy general admissions tickets beforehand, or can I get them at the gate? We'll be there before the first post, so I'm assuming before a majority of most people.

And listening to some big out a' town jasper, hearing him tell about horse-race gamblin'.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on a horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy sittin' on Dan Patch?
Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!
I've always gotten them at the gate
And there are people, lots of people, there the moment the gates open lol. There are tons there by first post.
If you want to make sure you get a spot somewhere good (say by the paddock), get your tickets beforehand, be one of the first people in line that morning, and make a break for it to grab a good spot once the gates open. There are a LOT of people that have that idea, so you have to be pushy sometimes.

Oh, I didn't assume we'd be there before everyone, but considering the attendance numbers of the Derby, I know the attendance levels go up more as the day progresses. We'll be leaving Indiana around 6, so hopefully we could get there by 8 or 8:30. Would that probably be good enough for a spot to get some pictures in the paddock?

Nope, that'd put you about 4th or 5th row back, maybe 3rd if your lucky or suck up(buy alcohol possibly) for the right people lol

You might get closer further down. I'm planning on going this year, though it's not set in stone. I used to have people I met that had an uncanny ability to get right next to the gate into the paddock right in front of everything and I'd hang out with them and buy a few rounds, but it's been a few years since I've been.
I just want to be able to see the horses go by and snap some pictures, though the main paddock area would be fabulous I'm trying not to get my heart set on it - we'll be there at 8:00 or a bit before, hopefully!

Good luck, if you find the right people it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Once we're closer to time I'll let you know if I'll be there.
