I really hope the UAE can find a compromise. If nothing more than the fact I maybe there next year and would love to see Igugu run in person. However if she doesn't go I do understand the trainer's perspective.

    IGUGU - PLANS SET FOR J & B MET 2012

Mike De Kock, trainer of Horse of the Year Igugu, discussed details of her future on the television show “Inside Racing’’ on Tellytrack this week. He went into detail about her plans for the upcoming season, but also denied a rematch with Ebony Flyer in the Queen's Plate, a race in which Igugu was beaten by the tough Cape filly.
Igugu was meant to be on a plane to Dubai but for the export protocol issues with South Africa and the international world. The star filly will now aim for the Grade 1 Paddock Stakes and then the J&B Met during the Cape season before attempting to fly to Europe subject to the potocol situation.
"She’s a very robust filly and she can be a handful. There was no way I was going to take the route via Mauritius," said De Kock about the alternative route taken by some horses to get to Dubai for the Carnival season next year.
“However, I’m confident we will clear it all up. If all goes well Igugu will stay in Cape Town after the Met and go directly into quarantine. From there she can go to Europe. That would be first prize. There are indications that things will change.’’
De Kock mentioned that she has had a beak and will run in Gauteng before going to Cape Town. “She has just started cantering again and the plan is to either race her in the Ipi Tombe Challenge or a Pinnacle Stakes a couple of weeks later. I didn’t want to wind her up for the Sansui Summer Cup and it also makes sense to stick to weight-for-age races right now. She’s done enough at handicap level. Joburg also has a fantastic Autumn season and then there’s Durban. I can tell you that if she’s still around in South Africa in July, I will have another crack at the Vodacom Durban July," he continued.
De Kock's other young superstar in the making, the classy Amanee, had been injured and will only return to the tracks sometime next year.
“She had a felock chip and she’s had an operation. She will be staying in Joburg and will probably go the same route as Igugu and run in the Triple Tiara races (Gauteng Fillies Guineas, SA Fillies Classic and SA Oaks).
“I gave all my horses a really good break and rested them longer than normal. I was fairly hard on them last season and we’ve also got some unraced horses who need to get out. They seem to be fairly decent but you never know until they are exposed.
“Of the older horses I feel Link Man is doing exceptionally well and we’ll probably line him up for the Queen’s Plate. Kavanagh has come back well from the rest. He’s is completely different horse but he has let me down before and we will have to see how he goes once he starts racing again before getting too excited.’’

Ho do you pronounce the name "Igugu?" Is it EYE-Gu-Gu?

I haven't watched her races before, so I hadn't heard it called.

Just watched the Vodacom Durban from July this year and it sounded like the race caller pronounced it Eh-gu-gu, with the "u" sounding like ruler.

    Igugu returns to Turffontein :

    December 2, 2011
IGUGU makes her first appearance this season in the Gr 2 Ipi Tombe Challenge over 1600m on the standside course at Turffontein. The now four-year-old star hasn’t raced since her riveting win in the Durban July, but she is expected to make a bold bid despite being short of peak fitness.

    Igugu in her Randjesfontein stable.
Mike de Kock commented: “Igugu is well and we’re very happy with her preparation. Her first mission is the Paddock Stakes, leading to the 2012 J&B Met. I think we’ve done enough with her for now, but she’ll make huge improvement with this race under her belt.”
Blueroute is one of two fillies to take on the colts in the Listed Secretariat Stakes over 1400m and Mike said: “It won’t be easy for her at the weights against her male rivals, but she’s a very nice filly and there was a lot to like about her second to Katy’s Lane in the Starling Stakes recently. We expect her to be competitive.”

It would be pronounced Eee-gugu - in much the same way as one would pronounce the letter "E" of the alphabet

According to Mike de Kock's website Igugu appears to have recovered well & plans are still on target for the J&B met: http://mikedekockracing.com/wp/index...ll-at-randjes/

    ----------
Igugu then worked under Anthony Delpech on the grass with the top work-horse Kavanagh. She was not entirely impressive and the word is still doing the rounds that she is not 100% yet. De Kock was apparently livid that her jockey had not galloped her according to instructions. Apparently the master trainer wanted her to follow Kavanagh and not make the pace in the gallop. A storm in a tea-cup maybe? With all the hype and tail pulling, punters may just be looking to beat the favourite at this stage.

WOW. In spite of a slow pace, she looked beat and left with too much to do, but she dug in and just kept coming and manages to win by 1/2 length. It didn't look possible. She is some kind of racehorse!

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

It wasn’t just the race that went all wrong for her. Leading up to the event she had a far from ideal preparation - coming down with a cough & being scratched from her prep run a few weeks back. Then after an 18 hour van ride to Cape Town this week, she had to go into quarantine until the day of the race (her trainer wasn’t even allowed near her other than to observe the filly through a window). Released from quarantine this morning, she was sweating up so badly in the paddock before the race that I concluded that if ever she's going to get beat, it’s today. She just didn’t look herself.
Then the race panned out so wrong for her that I & many felt she had no business winning - And despite it all, sheer heart & determination carried her through!

    What an awesome racehorse!

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

I have just watched the replay now.

    Wow! what a champion!!
Igugu is not the Horse of the Year for nothing.
Her record now is 12-10-2-0, unbeaten since Dec 2010.

    De Kock said,
"Igugu showed today why she is a champion,"
"To win was amazing and I am humbled by her performance. It just shows you the guts, heart and courage that she has. I am proud of her and of everybody who has anything to do with her."

Congrats to Igugu, her connections and everyone!!!

There is a great article on the Mike deKock website titled, "Igugu Humbles the Nation", which sums up really nicely all this girl had to go through to win this race & just how great an impact it made on all of us, her fans, in South Africa:

Take a look. Its worth the read
