Wow, what a filly! Loved the call in the last race- "you get the feeling she's pining for some globetrotting!"

Thanks for sharing, I wouldn't have heard of her otherwise

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

Mike de Kock commented; '' I wouldn’t slot her in second behind Horse Chestnut, but she is right up there with the best fillies I have trained. ''
'' It takes a special horse to win three successive races in a short period of time, over different distances. It is not easily done, we’ve seen how hard it is in the US, where many top horses fall at the last hurdle. I’ve studied the way the American trainers prepare their runners for their Triple Crown and it’s been of value to me. ''

I hope that Igugu is going to be an international star like Ipi Tombe who was trained by Mke de Kock.

    She wins again.

I have just learned that Igugu means ''jewel''.

    Igugu, Jewel of Greyville

June 5, 2011 By admin Leave a Comment
IGUGU means “jewel” in Zulu and this superstar Mike de Kock-trained Galileo three-year-old filly was the jewel of Saturday’s racing at Greyville, cruising to another facile Grade 1 win in the Woolavington 2 000, writes DAVID THISELTON.
The Mike de Kock-trained filly was “freshened up” after her famous Triple Tiara win in Johannesburg in which she won the Grade 2 Gauteng Guineas, the Grade 1 SA Fillies Classic and the Grade 2 SA Oaks by a combined margin of 20 lengths.
However, she still started at 1-4 favourite and led from start to finish.
She quickened clear at the top of the straight and found another gear when the challengers came, winning comfortably by 2,75 lengths from the Grade 1 Paddock Stakes winner Emerald Cove and her de Kock stable companion Berry Blaze.
The latter is Irish-bred and six months younger, but is rapidly improving and found some support into 3-1, but her threatening run from last position was repelled quite easily by the front pair in the end.
Igugu was bred in Australia and is owned by Sheik Mohamed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum. She will remain the July favourite, although the Daily News time was more than a second quicker than hers’ and the top five in the latter race are sure to enjoy support too.
Jockey Anthony Delpech said: “I don’t think I will ride a filly as good as this in my career”.
    http://mikedekockracing.com/wp/index...-of-greyville/

The Vodacom Durban July now looms and as impressive as Igugu's performances have been to date, she is going to face a much stiffer task there. However, she has been beating her own age and sex with any amount in hand and there is clearly plenty in the tank. She will be bidding to emulate her erstwhile stablemate Ipi Tombe, who also won this race en route to July glory and as trainer Mike de Kock said after the race, "We still haven't got to the bottom of her as yet."

I hope that she will do well in the Durban July (G1, 3up, 2200m turf), the biggest race in SA.
    I can't wait!

The way she tugs at the reins and and can quickly strike the front reminds me a more than a little of Frankel.

Will the July Cup be her first time facing males?
What is it about single-toed ungulates running around an oval for approximately 90 seconds that inspires people to bet billions of dollars and devote their entire lives to the activity?

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

With all of South Africa's top runners currently overseas & out of the picture, Igugu definitely has a big chance at following in Ipi Tombe's shoes & taking the July.
However, should a horse like Bravura recapture his pre-injury form - that saw him beating the likes of Bold Silvano & Irish Flame in their early three year old careers, or Past Master return to his best, I just cant see Igugu pulling it off...
Great filly though! Cant wait to see what comes this Saturday!

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

Igugu became the fourth three-year-old filly in history to win the Durban July, the last being Ipi Tombe in 2002, who was also trained by Mike De Kock.

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

It seems like every continent gets a super filly in the last few years. I hope Igugu will do some globe trotting!
Sea The Stars - perfection in equine form, a horse of a lifetime!

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

would LOVE to see Igugu enter the Breeders Cup or some other Classic over here

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

Man, I just LOVE these fillies! I can't help but hope this is a trend that just keeps going and going.

Love how she just zoomed through the opening on the rail, took the lead and stubbornly refused to let anyone else gain on her. Her win against the boys looked comfortable though not by a huge margin. I'd love to see her in Dubai like Ipi Tombe, or to come out and eyeball the Breeders' Cup! Filly and Mare Turf or Turf, not going to be picky.
And listening to some big out a' town jasper, hearing him tell about horse-race gamblin'.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on a horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy sittin' on Dan Patch?
Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

Well Mike will be bringing his star mare River Jetez over for either the Beverly D or Arlington Million this year, so should Igugu have success in Dubai, its quite possible that you guys will see her making a trip to the States by late next year

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

thanks for that race link..the best thing about all these girls is that they tend to stick around for a lot longer than the boys do. it is so much more exciting for a racing fan to follow a great horse for several years

Re: Igugu - Triple Tiara winner in South Africa

    Will she stay or go?

I pray that they will find a solution...
