Tampa Bay Downs handle increases again

Average daily handle at the recently completed 90-day meet at Tampa Bay Downs in Oldsmar, Fla., was a record $4,572,054, according to figures released by the track on Wednesday, an increase of 9.2 percent over last year’s figure and the latest in a string of meet-over-meet increases that have propelled Tampa into the upper echelon of North American racetracks.

Great track. Big fields. Great turf racing. It is close enough to Ocala wheree you could actually let our horses enjoy the winter at the farm and just occasionally head to Tampa.

Hats off to management for this amazing accomplishment. And it wasn't just taking advantage of Gulfstream dunderheadedness (though that played in). I like this quirky track.

TVG gets a big thumbs up for donating the guarantee in the P4 and beaming the product into homes, racing's newest market that still has a lot of upside potential, they get it.

"Television Games Network, contributed a $35,000 guarantee to the late pick four. Tampa said that handle for the pick four increased 47 percent over last year’s meet"

Reality: The P4 NEVER dropped below $35K, so TVG never had to pay out the guarantee.

Most track guarantees are set so low that they are rarely paid out.

Los Alamitos guarantees their early P4 every night at $75K, and it never drops below $100K

Monmouth guarantees their P5 on Haskell day at $250K, and last year the pool was $242K, so the track paid out the guarantee. They are guaranteeing the P5 again this year at $250K, but there may be a new owner by then.
