Thread: Awesome Gem!!!

    Awesome Gem!!!

He's still got it at 8- beating a field of four others, including Game on Dude in the Lone Star Park Handicap. Gotta love the Gemster

Yay Awesome Gem! I'm so disappointed I had to work today - I wanted to see Awesome Gem and Wasted Tears race. Happy for both of them.

Yeah, Gem! (Saved my day from being a total loss!)

Was going to post in the Gelding thread but agree that he deserves his own thread for this! Still going at 8!

Always happy to see this sweet boy do well! Asked Sergio to buy a bag of carrots for Gemster after the race since I couldn't be there. Love this boy!!!

Anyone else see the irony in the jockey's objection by Garcia?

    Re: Awesome Gem!!!

    This is interesting:

Awesome Gem removed blinkers two starts ago after wearing them his entire career and it seems to have been a benefit, said Dollase.

“It’s like he’s got a revived sense of run in him now without blinkers,” Dollase said. “He had a lot left in him today.

    From brisnet.com

West Point Thoroughbreds' venerable eight-year-old gelding AWESOME GEM (Awesome Again), who returned to Hollywood Park's Barn 54 North Tuesday after winning Monday's Lone Star Park H. (G3) in Texas, is on course for a title defense in the July 9 Hollywood Gold Cup (G1). "He keeps on firing," trainer Craig Dollase said. "He looks great. I'm looking forward to the Gold Cup. We used the Lone Star H. as a prep last year when he finished second. He's a fresher horse this year. We didn't ship him around as much." Dollase thinks the hard-trying veteran will earn more respect this year than last, when he surprised in the Hollywood Gold Cup at 8-1 odds. "He should be one of the choices," Dollase said. "He got a good Beyer figure at Lone Star, I think 101 (107 BRIS Speed rating). That puts us right in the hunt." Dollase said he will be a keen-eyed scout viewing Hollywood's Californian S. (G2) Saturday. "I'm looking forward to seeing the Californian for rivals," the trainer noted.

We have always liked him, but since their respective retirements he has replaced Funny Cide, Better Talk Now and Evening Attire as our favorite older male gelding!!!

That was a great race. I questioned Flores using him in the beginning of the race to get him closer to the pace than he normally lies. Turns out Flores knows more about riding than I do.

Apparently the track at EmD plays funny, especially on Mile day. Good call by Flores.
