Thread: Top 2 year olds

    Top 2 year olds

We have a lot of debates and discussions about the best TC near winners, the best 3 year olds since Bid or in the past 10 years, etc...what about the 2 year olds? I've made a poll with some of the more talented 2 year olds in the past 10 years...who's your pick and why? (I included Point Given even though he was a 2 year old in 2000 because we haven't had a 2011 champion 2 year old yet so I figure 2000 could still be included) This is based on how good you think they were as a 2 year old.

I voted other. My vote would go to 2001 Champion Johannesburg. He couldn't carry on at three, but he was an exceptional two year old. He went 7 for 7, with six graded wins, four of them G1, in four different countries (England, Ireland, France and America) on two surfaces. I can't think of a two year old in Europe or America in the last ten years that he couldn't beat.

I voted 'other' because I really liked War Pass.

I went with Vindication, but Uncle Mo is a close second.

    Lookin At Lucky or Vindication.

Methinks some of the voting may be colored by the 3 year old campaign of the horses in the poll, or by the margins of victory. The only 3-time (and could have been 4-time if it weren't for his lousy post, he lost the 4th by a nose) G1 winner in the group is Lookin At Lucky. And he got a G2 too. His 2 year old campaign was very much like one of the oldtimers, and he's the only one of the group who won the Eclipse for both champion 2 year old AND 3 year old. He definitely got my vote. Much as I liked Point Given he didn't have as good a 2 year old campaign as LAL.

I should probably have explained the way to vote. The poll is really asking who you think was the better 2 year old. Not just who had the better campaign. (but obviously their campaign plays some part in it) Example, Lookin at Lucky had a much better campaign than Uncle Mo, but many will argue Uncle Mo was more impressive in winning those 3 races he won (2 of of them being the Champagne and BCJ, which gives him some merits in the campaign part of it) than Lookin at Lucky was in any of his races as a 2 year old.

    I agree.

Strickly just looking at their 2 year old form, throw them all into a race, this is how I would rank the above listed.

    Vindication
    Uncle Mo
    Afleet Alex
    Point Given
Sweet Catomine (call me crazy but yes, I believe her and Halfbridled were that good as 2 year olds, I considered ranking Sweet Catomine higher)
    Halfbridled
    Lookin at Lucky
    Street Sense
    Awesome Feather

Point Given hands down with Lucky a close second. With a little more luck, Lucky would be number one. He came so close in the BC Juvenile. That race really made me a fan of his.
You've got to ask yourself one question. Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, Punk?

Uncle Mo has the most raw talent, but Johannesburg ran the most impressive campaign.
