That's really cool that John rode Noor. $5000 shouldn't be hard for them to raise if they get the article into the right hands, Bloodhorse, Thoroughbred Times, DRF, or even have Old Friends post something. Or maybe if people ride Santa Anita hard enough they will okay his burial there which would greatly lessen the cost.

Re: Noor deserves a champion's resting place

I hope Noor is relocated and moved to a spot where he won't be disturbed in this world again. He deserves that much. That says alot for John's horsemanship that he was only one of two people allowed to ride him in retirement.

Wonderful blog piece by Steve Haskin on Noor himself and the effort to save his remains:

And see the end of Hovdey's most recent blog for a way to donate for Noor's transport to a final resting place, AND a video glimpse of Noor in top form plus his PPs:

what a wonderful article. The only thing i disagreed with, was that Old Friends was talking about exhuming Skip Away too.And i don't agree with that.I agree Noor should be exhumed, because his grave is in danger of development and will be lost. But Skip Away's isn't. Skip Away should be able to remain in his final resting place at Hopewell, since Hopewell was his home

Hopewell is for sale. That may be the reason of the thought to move him.

Re: Noor deserves a champion's resting place

The article says that Noor suffered from dementia in his later years. Hadn't heard that before. The Nasrullahs tended to be pretty crazy though, so maybe that was part of it.

Re: Noor deserves a champion's resting place

They still need a bit in order to move Noor by the end of August:

"As of July 13, $3,300 still needs to be raised in order to bring Noor to Kentucky. "

Anyone wishing to contribute to Noor’s disinterment and move can send their donations via check, money order, or PayPal to Old Friends, 1841 Paynes Depot Rd., Georgetown, Ky., 40324 or contact their website (http://www.oldfriendsequine.org/). Please write the name Noor to specify for what your donation is intended."

Re: Noor deserves a champion's resting place

It's a nice thought, but with so many horses in need, shouldn't the focus be on saving live horses? Send Noor to Santa Anita if you're sending him anywhere, that's the place of his biggest win.

I don't understand why he's not going to Santa Anita either - did they say no?

From the articles I read when this thread was first started, they asked Santa Anita if they could move Noor's remains there. Santa Anita never said yes or no.

Seabiscuit's burial? Same ranch where Noor was buried? Still kept a secret?

Re: Noor deserves a champion's resting place

Were only Barbaro's hooves, head, and heart buried? Eight Belles? Indyanne? George Washington? Rewilding? And all the others listed on the What Ever Happened to? forum.

What happens to the rest of the horse when that is done? Rendered for zoo animal food? (And that is okay, just asking.) Or landfill (not so good considering the drugs used to euthanize.) And space is always a premium.

    Curious.

Stories and news briefs on Noor are interesting. Thanks for sharing. And Blue Jeans I wondered too about Seabiscuit's burial after the comment about the parking lot. Why keep it a secret now? Why then?

From what I know, the head/heart/hooves tradition was from the era when it took considerable manpower to move and bury a large animal (historically, the rest went to the dogs or was rendered). I think it's still sometimes used when burial space is at a premium. Burying horses entire became a lot more common once we had backhoes! However, cremation is very popular these days. Barbaro was cremated and the Jacksons held onto his ashes for several months until they decided on a burial site.

As for Seabiscuit's grave...isn't it possible that no one alive knows where he's buried?

Re: Noor deserves a champion's resting place

    OF press release:

Noor's Re-internment ceremony scheduled at Old Friends

Having traveled cross-country from the Loma Rica Ranch in Grass Valley, CA., the body of deceased Hall of Fame champion Noor will be re-interred in Kentucky at Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, on Wednesday August 31.

Members of the press and fans are invited to attend the ceremony, which will be held at 10 am at Old Friends’s Dream Chase Farm, 1841 Paynes Depot Road in Georgetown.

In attendance will be Michael Blowen, president and founder of Old Friends, and Charlotte Farmer, the woman who led the effort to exhume Noor and bring his remains to Kentucky.

Noor died in Grass Valley in 1974 at age 29 and was buried in the infield of the old Loma Rica Ranch Racetrack, but the property is now in development for residential and commercial use. He will be re-interred in a new cemetery for Hall of Fame inductees near the entrance of Old Friends.

Noor, son of the superstar stallion Nasrullah, was campaigned by owner-breeder Charles S. Howard (also the owner of Seabiscuit) after the colt’s 3-year-old season in 1948.

Trained by Burley Parke and ridden by Johnny Longden, Noor was voted 1950 handicap champion after winning four out of five head-to-head sprints with Citation and defeating the then 7-year-old Assault. The victories made Noor the first horse to beat two Triple Crown winners.

Farmer raised nearly $8,000 to exhume Noor’s remains and bring them to this final resting place at Old Friends. Included with his remains will be soils from the Santa Anita, Golden Gate, and Hollywood Park racetracks, all sites of Noor's victories

Re: Noor deserves a champion's resting place

Noor is way overlooked - I am so greatful he will be at Old Friends and be able to forever Rest In Peace and be known and "discovered" by racing fans - wish I could be there - if anyone goes = let all know how the ceremony goes..
