    Anak Nakal

is running Friday in a $75K Allw Opt claiming race, not in for the tag. Didn't think he was still out there:http://www.equibase.com/static/entry...EQB.html#RACE3

Another of the early performers from Zito. Won his debut race. If you bet him blindly through his next 8 starts, you would only have gotten one win, and the $18.40 returned on $16 would have been only a small profit; if you'd stayed with him for one more race, you would have made $53 for $18; if you let him run out his 3yo season, you would have closed the books on him with $22 bet for $53 returned. This will be his seventh start in the intervening 31 months without a win.

He started out with so much promise.

It always makes me sad to see a horse go from running in the Derby to running for a claiming tag.And yet it seems to happen to so many of them.

It's an ALW/Optional Claimer. Emphasis on optional.

The option is, of course, available to him because--although he ran in the Kentucky Derby--he has yet to finish a race in the winner's circle more than twice against winners.

As long as he keeps losing, he will never have to run for a tag.

True. They will be presented with a dilemma if he wins.

Looking at the field for the Suburban, I'd say wheel him back on Saturday.

Has there been any news on Anak Nakal either in recovery or euthanized? I heard he was vanned off from his last race, and some speculation that he was put down, but can't find anything official. Any info on Anak would be appreciated. He is one of my favorites.

I can't find anything, either. No death report on file with JC, but not always reported. Sometimes, no news is good news.

When was his last race? I saw him run this year at Tampa and he wasn't competitive but he looked fine.

I just checked with a friend on Facebook, Alysse Jacobs, a photographer . He's definitely retired. I believe he was injured, but it wasn't life threatening. She's friends with the Zitos.

If Zito gets a 2 year old to win a race, he automatically becomes a Derby horse. You just don't know which Derby. Is there one in Utah?

Glad to hear he's retired. I take it then that Zito was able to obtain the information for Alysse? Because AN hadn't been running for Zito in a long time.

Thank you so much for happy news. Enjoy your retirement Anak, you deserve it.

Glad--but surprised--that Zito kept up with him. Anak Nakal hasn't run for Zito in over three years.
