[QUOTE=Jas;223274]I'm right there with you. I really wasn't looking to claim anything but when I saw her in for that I knew I had to roll the dice.
She really is a lovely physical mare, especially for the price.[/QUOT
Agree totally. I don't know if that speaks to her particular situation (was she owned by someone not interested in breeding?) or the still lousy (if you're seeing it from where I am) economy that's really nailing the racing industry.
Did you need to survive a shake or was yours the only claim?
However, congratulations and all the best with her and the others!
She was a rather unattractive yearling... short and dumpy looking, as you can see from the photos MM posted.
She's pretty good thru her knees. They're not perfect but there's not a ton of deviation there either. I think she was just slow to develop physically.

.
Without knowing the horse, it is hard to say but I can see their point. $10,000 in hand in July may be better than -what?- $15,000 in November when you have to pay fees, consignors and board until then. Open mares and broodmare prospects do not sell like gangbusters in this economy.
My trainer just spoke with someone from her former connections. They're not happy. They thought with the breeding season over they'd get away with it.
Silly, really.

Paw! If they really weren't ready to lose her, they shouldn't have put her in claimers, unfortunately for them that is the risk they went for.
She is truly a LOVELY specimen from her confo shot, I can't wait to see her filled out and grown up. She has such a pretty head. Do you guys ride your mares at all, or do they enjoy their time entirely to their own devices?
And listening to some big out a' town jasper, hearing him tell about horse-race gamblin'.
Not a wholesome trottin' race, no, but a race where they sit down right on a horse!
Like to see some stuck-up jockey boy sittin' on Dan Patch?
Make your blood boil? Well, I should say!
Just to underscore how brutal the market is right now even for well bred open broodmare prospects, this is from last January:
Sold for $2000

Sold for $7000

RNA for $14,000

I wish you the best of luck Jas but as I know you know, in this market you have to make your unproven mares generally by taking a swing and getting a fancy baby. I have faith that you will do it![]()
You're absolutely right, Pronz. The market is really unforgiving at the moment.
I actually have notes on two of the fillies you listed... 1221 and 914 were both looked at by my agent and he said they were lucky to be 15h at most. PONY tiny. They both brought more than he thought they would.

I know plenty of people who always scour the form looking at mares with good pedigrees and then they go back and forth and try to figure out if they want to take a gamble that all that's wrong with the mare is on the outside and then if they can afford to keep her out in a field all summer and then they make a decision.
If they had her in for 25K that's one thing but 10K, geez that was really begging for someone to roll the die.
I will be in Lexington all next week, I can't wait to see my baby. Jas is your mare still going to be at the track or has she gone to the farm with your other mares?
Do you know if you had to shake for her? Even with the time of the year, I would still think there would be people out there who would have taken that gamble for that price. Looks like you won that one; can't believe the previous owners were actually surprised someone took her.
You know, I would think Broken Vow would really give you a bit too much stamina and too little speed. The filly broke her maiden going long, and her pedigree is really full of distance horses. Just for a suggestion (and its worth exactly what you're paying for it), Id send her to a race horse proven sire with some speed, something like City Zip or Northern Afleet. Try and get a really good racing foal out of her right off the bat.
You're sure collecting a nice group of mares there.
I believe we were the only claim. I was not told of a shake, so I doubt there was one.
I'm actually looking very hard at another filly being dropped. I don't need another one at the moment but she's grabbed my interest in a big way.

Jas...you probably already saw it, but Mayo on the Side's yearling half brother by Bluegrass Cat is scheduled to go through FT today as Hip 110. Hope he's a homerun and adds some value to the family.
updated to add: RNA at 70k

I saw that. My broodmare Guiding Star's half-sister, also by Bluegrass Cat, sold for 80k.

Well done! Can't wait to see what she produces!
Here's a photo of her from today. You can see how much she's filled out. Not a great pic of her but she's full of quality. She'll most likely be going to Arch.
