Time goes by fast doesn't it? Only a little over two weeks until Jersey's big race.

    So to summarize...

    Astrology
    Coil/Prayer For Relief
    Concealed Identity
    JJ's Lucky Train
    Pants On Fire/Ruler On Ice
    Rattlesnake Bridge
    Shackleford

Looks like a field of seven unless the Hall's send both...

Kind of a snoozer, but I think Pants on Fire could be sitting on something big.
Well there's lots of smart ideas in books I've never read, when the girls come talk to me I wish to hell I had

Sorry for Anna. She's missing some big races.

Not sure who isn't running? Who would spice up the race?

I mean, everybody is hurt, but when the "headliner" in a race like the Haskell is a horse that was off the board in 2/3 of the TC races, I think that makes for a down year. I actually think this crop is quite talented - it just so happens that the talent is either currently injured or in the process of recovering from injury.

Who is your "headliner"? Not Shackleford or Ruler On Ice?

    Concealed Identity?

    I'd guess Pants on Fire?

The headliner of the race is definitely Shackleford. Ruler On Ice has all of the makings of the next Sarava, Da' Tara, Commendable, etc. I could be wrong regarding him, but I don't expect to be. Concealed Identity is a nice horse now that will eventually end up running for a tag at Delaware and Pimlico, Pants on Fire has the potential to win some moderate/nice races, but in most years he'd be more of a WV Derby/PA Derby horse, JJ's Lucky Train looks like a G3 sprinter, nothing more, Astrology (I think he's targeting the Jim Dandy) has the makings of a classic underachiever, Rattlesnake Bridge is still living off the hype of running second to Uncle Mo down at Gulfstream, and the Baffert-duo, while both nice horses, certainly have chinks in their armor.

ruler on ice has been consistent, finishing off the board only once. i wouldnt be surprised if he picked up a check here. still questioning shack's distance limits, even here. that said, i want him to win.

But let's also be honest about Ruler On Ice...he still managed to lose the Federico Tesio and Sunland Derby. He showed up and ran a strong race on the right day, but he doesn't exactly hold the credentials that scream budding superstar.

Stay Thirsty...if you knew ROI was definitely running in it then you would at least have the Preakness and Belmont winners.

    Shackleford is the headliner.

He ran in all three TC races...won the Preakness and was a close second in the Florida Derby...but his point is he was off the board in the other too and he's still the headliner...but heck...LAL was the headliner last year and he was way off the board in 1/2 TC starts.

Just look at the names on Injured Reserve (or those retired) -

    Premier Pegasus
    Uncle Mo
    Boys at Toscanova
    Soldat
    Nehro
    Archarcharch
    Dialed In
    Jaycito
    Animal Kingdom
    To Honor and Serve
    The Factor
    Toby's Corner

This crop was not a bad crop by any means. It was just an unlucky crop where the vast majority of 'good' dirt horses got hurt. I think a very strong case can be made that this crop is currently without it's top 10 dirt horses.

    And don't forget:

    Comma To The Top
    Gourmet Dinner
And what ever happened to Silver Medallion? Was he hurt too?

I pick Coil to win if he goes. Pants on Fire and Prayer for Relief are good too.

He needs an easy lead to run his best (his trainer and jock have even said it). He won't get that with Shackleford in here. And even at his best, I don't think he's the most talented of this field. But he seems to like the Monmouth track, which will help him. Shackleford might love the Monmouth track as well, won't be a bit surprised to see that.

Shackleford is the one to beat definitely. I won't be surprised to see Prayer For Relief run really well either. (assuming Baffert enters him) I agree with what you said about Ruler on Ice. He might be the Belmont winner, but I don't think he's going to be one of the ones to beat here. I'm not sold he didn't just win the Belmont because of the track and distance. If Coil can relax, I still think he'll be really tough. He's still learning and the Swaps was just another learning experience. This race will tell me if I'm wrong about him being talented or not.
