    Sydney's Candy at Saratoga

Did I just hear that he galloped out, not worked, but galloped out this morning, on turf, the fastest 3/4 work time ever recorded at the Spa? In 1:09 and change?

He worked 5f in 57, so it would not be too difficult to go 6 in 109. The turf is probably a rock in that heat.

It was nearly 2 seconds faster than the 2nd fastest work. I dont know if you are there, but I have friends there, and they just txt me that is not even 80 degrees right now.

I know its much more fun to believe the NY Daily News, which makes its money dramatizing issues, but this is the weather at Saratoga:

The lack of rain after days of heat bakes the turf. Makes it like a rock. That is why $20,000 claimers nearly broke 1:40 on the turf on Thursday (TR is only a second faster).

Affirmed worked 1:09 before the Travers. Probably a breeze

I'd like to see him stay on the turf and take on Courageous Cat, and eventually Goldi in the fall, but I get the feeling that's not going to happen. Fabulous work though, he seems to be taking the change in scenery in stride.

Sid should be gearing up for that $1mil Woodbine Mile and the BC Mile. Goldi will have her hands full with him.

She handled him pretty easily last year. As much as I like Sidney's Candy, he's got to take a few more jumps of improvement to get the better of her.

On another note, I would LOVE to see him try the Whitney! But guess that's very unlikely now.

So he will be 1-9. I think the Forego makes much more sense.

But I think they want to keep him on turf, especially after that workout

Sec, he is a 4 yo now. If handled right, I think he could be a monster on the turf at a mile to 9 furs. Luresque......

Sadly he won't have much time to prove it.

I've always thought this horse had the potential to be a beast, but there's always something, be it a setback or whatever with him. Or at least it feels that way. I'd love to be proven right before he retires.

I agree. I was just saying he "needs" to improve to beat her. Not that he didn't have the potential too.

You really have to wonder what the thinking was buying this horse. If he races exclusively on the turf it is unlikely he will value himself at his purchase price...which is why, of course, Elliot Walden mentioned the Forego, as at least a dirt Grade 1 will make him a reasonably valuable stallion. However, the stallion value upside of winning the Whitney is worth all risk ( winning the Fourstardave probably devalues him )...especially given he can still run in the Forego after the Whitney if necessary.

This makes me wonder what Todd Pletcher's opinion is of his talents. Surely he can't be satisfied with Mission Impazible's Whitney chances. I like Sydney's Candy, but this whole thing is very odd.

How does winning a graded stake race devalue a horse?

Because turf horses have little stallion value in this country. Presumably with not only earnings potential, but also added stallion value potential, he sold over his actual ( and minimal ) stud value. Only winning a major dirt Grade 1 ( we'll stay in the real world and assume he isn't winning the BC Turf Mile ) can make him valuable enough to jutstify his purchase price ( i.e. substantially increase his value ). Winning a Grade 2 turf race will have an opposite affect. It certainly won't bolster his value, but it will also draw him closer to retirement with less opportunities.

    This is pretty basic stuff.

Pretty basic stuff? He has done something Mo hasn't done. Won a G1 at 9 furlongs on dirt. Oops. Plastic. He has 4 main track stake wins from 7 to 9 furs, and set a track record in his turf win.

You sound like part of the problem...Race the horse on a surface he might not be best on to improve his stud value rather than ru him on a surface on which he might be a superior runner..

He's a Candy Ride. Candy Ride is Argentina's favorite son. Rubio B Stable of Argentina purchased a large interest in Sidney's Candy from WinStar. He's already set to shuttle to Haras La Pasion in Argentina next year.
