Summer Bird, Bellamy Road, Artie, et al., relocating to WinStar

Tweet from Frances Karon: "WinStar has acquired an interest in...Bellamy Rd, Summer Bird, Artie Schiller & US Ranger from Pauls Mill & will relocate them to WinStar." (Quoting press release, I believe.)

    Wow.

    Wow.
That seems a strange move for Paul's Mill unless they are going out of business or something. That is a lot of young talent to lose.

From the BH article: Ben Walden, the elder brother to Elliott, will continue to own and operate Pauls Mill as a Thoroughbred farm, but will no longer stand stallions.

I'm definitely concerned about this. Catinca is now there, and I visited the farm in May. Obviously the articles say that Ben Walden will continue to run the farm as usual, but it's definitely a concern! Do they really need her there if they aren't trying to support their stallions?

I'm wondering whether they'll keep their bloodstock & sales divisions, too. Who knows, maybe there is some underlying personal/financial reason behind all this.

I am glad i got to see the stallions at Paul's Mill a couple of months ago along with some of the mares. Wonder why they left the stallion business so quickly. The stud barn is gorgeous!

Hope they return to the stallion business eventually

I was just there THIS MORNING and nothing was mentioned.

Just another chapter for Ben Walden I would think. His passion seems to be restoring farms and turning them into showplaces, rather than standing stallions. It wasn't that long ago that he was at Hurricane Hall with different stallions (like English Channel) who also relocated when he moved on.

Maybe I was one of the few who was surprised to see him BACK in the stallion business after he left years ago.

Or maybe it's just like corporate america when a bigger company eats a smaller company, the reason is "we have an obligation to our shareholders" NOT to the employees of either organization so yes many of you will lose your job. In this case, winstar might have made an offer that was in the best interest of the shareholders to accept.

At least now we know they'll need another barn... they will also have Sidney next year so that one barn cant' hold four more.

In the upcoming F-T Texas yearling sale, Pauls Mill has a pretty large consignment, including acting as agent for the Spendthrift yearlings. Normally, Spendthrift used Legacy to sell down here. Are they shifting their focus or have they always done this in other states?

    Usually is with Ben Walden.

Mark Toothaker is now with Pauls Mill bloodstock. He is from Arkansas & always had a presence at the Texas/Louisiana sales. Tommy Eastham formed Legacy a few years back & added Mark as a partner later. Tommy has left Legacy to start Eastwynd Sales. Spendthrift has some stallions in Louisiana & used Legacy in the past hints why they are now moved over to Pauls Mill.

Aww I was hoping to see Summer Bird at Paul's Mill. At least he's going to a good farm like Winstar though.

I had heard about him in 1991.. by a rather famous but now deceased person there who also seemed to have the same issue.

I literally said, "What" out loud.

Holy balls, man, that was unexpected.

Winstar's expanding so quickly with the new training/layup facility and adding stallions like crazy. Makes me wonder if this was a direction Mr. Casner didn't want to go, thus the split.
