    Question about bleeding in races

I was watching the 6th from CT last night, and a horse that I follow, My Reward, won. After each race, I routinely read the chart. It said that the "stewards reported that My Reward bled durning the running of the race". I can't remember seeing this before, does it mean that she bled alot? Is it a rule that this has to be done? Just curious, hope she's ok.

I would think that if it's noted in the chart, he probably bled significantly.

Yeah, that's what I thought, looked ok for the pic, but you never know. And she just found where she comfortable running to, hopefully they can get it corrected.

Re: Question about bleeding in races

When horses bled visibly to the naked eye ie out of the nostril they are put on the vet's list regardless of the amount of blood.

the "penalty" depends on the amount of times the horse has been determined to have bleed and the rules of the state that you're racing in. The lay up time for each successive episode varies from state to state, usually resulting in a lifetime ban after a specific number on episodes. I'm not really up on the specifics because, thanks to the judicious use of lasix from early 2yo year on, i haven't had a two time bleeder in about 10 years.

Thanks, all. Is the vet's list something that anyone can get into, couldn't seem to find it on their site, just curious to see if she is on it for bleeding.

Depends on the jurisdiction. Cali regularly publishes their vet's list.

    Bleeding penalty's in most states:

1st time (includes when a horse is put on lasix).......10 days

    2nd time..........can't race for 30 days

    3rd time..........can't race for 6 months

    4th time..........barred from racing

this is why if a horse comes back from a race and trickles a small amount of blood from the nostril, a trainer or groom will do everything they can to avoid the state vet from seeing it.If a horse bleeds the trainer will treat it more aggressively with other medications in addition to lasix when it races again.....or if it was treated with a low dose of lasix (say 3cc),they will just increase the dose in the horses next start (up to 10cc)..

If they caught it in the chart then you can be sure the state vet caught it and the horse
will be on the vet's list for bleeding...

Re: Question about bleeding in races

Most state racing commissions will have a place they post rulings online and there will be a ruling on her and it will state whether its the first instance or not. I'm assuming since she was already on lasix, it will be a second instance but I'm not sure how they handle that there. Since you have to have bled to get on lasix, then it any further instance would be a repeat unless they confine it to a time frame.
