few these days outside of Ramon.....best at it was Laffit
There are some specific cases where a rider helps a single horse in a single situation, but watching Dominguez do it all the time is amazing......Lost art these days

If he is riding, keep your $2 in your pocket. Couldn't win a walkover the way he is riding lately.

Not only could he get a horse out of the gate like none other, in his heyday he could change the whole complexion of a race, if you were a handicapper you'd be silly to ignore what he was capable of doing, yes he made a difference.
Before we would back Milo we would make sure we looked at his eyes to find out how much partying he had done along Prairie Avenue near Hollywood Park.......We were usually warned off. Here was a guy who had been regular rider of Kelso who drank himself to nothingness.
Patrick come along and destroys a good career...It is hard to believe he received so many second chances...In any other career he would have bee ruled off for life
I have no idea....that is a function of his agent and nothing more
Pure grit and determination catapulted Laffit to many an early win on horses that shouldn't have. His rides on Tasso and Is It True were classics willing the horse to the line and in the latter case reading the track going out in the third lane realizing that the rail was dead as a doornail that day at Churchill.
It is that kind of savvy and thinking outside the norm that put these riders into a class by themselves. Having seen Russel Baze a number of times, I have often wondered why he never went big time with his skills.

I'm sure there are some bad memories some people have of his rides, but the thing I remember most was that he never seemed to get in trouble, blocked down inside or swung outside by raceriding. Turning for home he always seemed to get his horse in a position to win, and if the horse was good enough.....win they did, over 7,000 times!
True LOOK NO FURTHER than the Belmont on Alysheba...Sitting behind the winner and outflanked by Cryptoclearance he got boxed in and had to take back right about the time Lafitt let the latter go.....He missed his chance to accelerate and Bet Twice was gone and cooled out
Did see him in a funny one where he got his whip wrapped up in the tail of the horse to his right and had to drop it late in the race.

In a stakes race give me Gomez, 12 Breeders Cup wins in 6 years, no one I rather have on my stakes horse.
