"Last major match race"? Wasn't that in 1975, not 1964?

There were TWO major ones after this one, neither coming to mean much

The ridiculous Miss Musket/Chris Everett which was simply a mismatch

the Ruffian/Foolish Pleasure battle that ended tragically

^ I remember hearing about Chris Evert destroying Miss Musket at Hollywood Park in 1974.

Still, as you note yourself, that 1964 match race was not the last major match race. The Foolish Pleasure vs Ruffian one was.

That was, in essence, a walk over just like the Miss Musket/Chris Everett....No contests

and Convenience/Typecast was June 1972 as I was there

Now they did hold another one that season put on by Bobbie Frankle between a Q horse Chirawiri and the then, leading sprinter, Indulto at a quarter mile. Over out of the gate, the q-horse got so far out front that it was a joke. This proved nothing as Hollywood had also been part of the Fair Truckle q horse T-bred race many years before.

Oop, sorry. The only date I saw when I was looking at the pic the first time was '64. Now I see the '72 on there.

    Are we only counting Thoroughbreds?

Because Black Ruby vs Taz and Bar JF Hot Ticket vs Sarah Nelson were pretty major IMHO.

    Re: last major match race

Soviet Problem and Mamselle Bebette had a match race at Del Mar ... August 1994.

I seem to recall that John Forsythe might have had a filly who was going to run too, but maybe something happened to her and she was unable to run.

Soviet Problem won the race easily. Most match races are won by the horse with the most speed.

She came to Laurel after that race and won the Laurel Dash (against boys).

There are actually more match races than the publicized ones. I watched one at Pimlico many years ago because the race was taken off the turf and it scratched down to two horses. The race started in front of the stands and the two horses went head and head the entire race. It was quite exciting ... and these were not racing stars by any means. And neither one of them was hurt.
