Thread: The Gelding Thread

    Re: The Gelding Thread

    From brisnet.com

At Woodbine, Bruno Schickedanz's YUMMY WITH BUTTER (Silvador) got the nose bob on the wire over Stray Cat Stride (Cat's at Home) to win the $117,000 Overskate S. with jockey Tyler Pizarro aboard. Conditioned by Mark Fournier, the five-year-old gelding stopped the clock in 1:22 for seven Polytrack furlongs to earn his first stakes victory. Yummy With Butter had previously placed in seven black-type events, including last year's edition of the Overskate, and now shows a 21-5-5-6, $344,322, record.

JAMBALAYA (Langfuhr), the seven-year-old who has been sidelined due to various infirmities since taking the 2007 Arlington Million (G1), will make his return to the races in Friday's 2ND race at Woodbine. The C$90,2000 allowance/optional claimer will be run at 1 1/16 miles on the turf. Trained by Catherine Day-Phillips, Jambalaya also scored victories in the Gulfstream Park Turf S. (G1) and Pan American H. (G3) in 2007, and placed in three other graded stakes. He will be ridden on Friday by Jono Jones. His main competition will come from ROYAL OATH (Kingmambo), who will be making his second start back from a year-long layoff. Royal Oath won his 2008 finale in the King Edward H. (Can-G2).

Those cells go quicker with age......watch out!

Regardless, he looked good, and seemed to do it with ease. (I have mixed emotions, I love following Langfuhr's progeny, but was rooting for The Tin Man 2 years ago.)
Jono Jones, riding Jambalaya for the first time since a ninth-place finish here in the 2006 Canadian International, had the 7-year-old laying last in the field of four but moved to the lead turning into the stretch and pulled away through the last furlong.

"He was fantastic; he's as good as ever," Jones said. "When I asked him, it was just a matter of how much he was going to win by."

Catherine Day Phillips, who trains Jambalaya and races the gelding under the banner of her family's Kingfield Farm, was ecstatic following the victory.

"It's awesome; it just feels so good," said Day Phillips, who was getting Jambalaya back to the races after several previous comeback attempts.

"The other times, we were trying to make him come back. This time, everything kind of fell into place. He's taken us here."

While Day Phillips was extremely pleased with Jambalaya's physical condition, she admitted to some trepidation coming into Friday's classified allowance race.

"He's been training as well as he ever trained," Day Phillips said. "But where that put him fitness-wise, running against horses who had been racing, I didn't know."

Jambalaya had the answer as he finished in 1:41.70 and returned $6.20 as the second choice.
Don't forget the diminutive WV-bred 3yo RUSSELL ROAD, who was ever so briefly on the TC trail but has found his niche as a sprinter. He's won 9 of 12 races lifetime, and he has lost but once (his debut) to state-breds. He's in the Millard Harrell Memorial Stakes (race 4) tonight at Ct, the 1/5 favorite on the ML.

Five-year-old geldings went 1-2 in the President's Cup S. (9fT) at PHA today: Soldier's Dancer, who won last year as well, and Vanquisher.

Edited to add: And how could I forget!? Eight-year-old Delaware River won the Smarty Jones Classic S. at PHA for, I believe, the third year in a row.

In what will likely be his final race in a multi-graded stakes winning career, the millionaire Fort Prado won the $50,000 Kentucky Cup Turf Dash at Kentucky Downs by a nose over Yankee Injunuity. The 8-year-old son of El Prado was the 2006 Illinois Horse of the Year.
