Churchill will host a brief ceremony to honor Brass Hat between races Saturday. Brass Hat, an earner of nearly $2.2 million for owner-breeder Fred Bradley, was retired earlier this week at age 10.

Nice to hear that he's doing well ... And being that he's your name here, obviously you've got a big soft spot for him. I do too ... He reminds me of a very good period in my life.

I remember when he first shipped down to Southern California. He really blew the field that day! Love his name too ... "The Bad Cat" ... VERY cool ... The first time I saw his name, probably his first or second race, I was like "What a cool name! I'm gonna keep my eye on this pony!"

Very cool running style too! Does he still pretty much have the same stride? And what had he been up to during his hiatus? Had he been injured?

And also ... Thanks for the video of him ... It was great seeing him again! He seems to still have the same presence he had before. Very kind of "I'm cool and I know it" like ...

10yo Catlaunch had a heck of a race yesterday in the Michael F. Rowland Memorial H., giving 8 to 17 pounds to the rest of the field. It was his 36th win of 85 lifetime starts (84 in the state of Ohio). He's the only horse on the Top 200 All-Time Leaders by Wins list that is still actively racing.

Little Mike will miss Poker with shin injury

Little Mike, who rose to prominence in the national turf ranks by capturing three Grade 3 stakes at Gulfstream Park last winter, has been sidelined by a shin injury, according to trainer Dale Romans, who had intended to run the 4-year-old gelding in the Poker Stakes at Belmont next Friday, June 10.

“It’s nothing that threatens his career in the long term,” said Romans. “Hopefully we’ll have him back by the fall, or by Gulfstream next winter at the very latest.”

Little Mike, bred and owned by Carlo and Priscilla Vaccarezza, swept the Fort Lauderdale, Canadian Turf, and Appleton handicaps at Gulfstream.

Brass Hat takes one last lap

Brass Hat had one last jog around the Churchill track Monday morning before leaving for his permanent retirement home at Indian Ridge Farm in Frankfort, Ky. The 10-year-old Brass Hat, a longtime fan favorite who earned nearly $2.2 million, was honored with a winner’s circle ceremony between races here Saturday.

“Hopefully he’ll pass the baton to one of my other horses,” said Buff Bradley, who trained Brass Hat for his father, owner-breeder Fred Bradley. “But no one will ever replace him. There’ll never be another like him.”

Claim pays off with Ponzi Scheme

With the win in the $75,000 Skip Away Stakes last weekend, Ponzi Scheme has already been a productive claim for trainer Juan Serey and owner John Koenig.

Scooped up for $20,000 last August, the 4-year-old gelding has already won three times for the new barn.

The latest was a career-best effort, a front-running score that produced a 103 Beyer Speed Figure.

“Sometimes you get lucky to claim a horse like him,” Serey said.

Serey made a few alterations, starting with gelding the horse immediately after the claim.

Koenig quickly gave all the credit to Serey.

“When we got that horse, we didn’t know if we’d win a race with him,” he said.

Now they are starting to dream bigger.

Fresh from Ponzi Scheme’s first stakes win, they are now targeting the Greenwood Cup, a 1 1/2-mile race at Parx Racing on July 16. It is a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race, giving the winner an expenses-paid spot in the Breeders’ Cup Marathon.

“Every time they try to catch him with an outrider after a race, they can’t pull him up,” Koenig said. “The way he runs says he’ll go longer. We think he’ll get better going longer.

“You’ve got to dream, and if you want a dream for the Breeders’ Cup, the Marathon is the easiest shot to take.”

The next likely Monmouth appearance for Ponzi Scheme could be the Grade 3 Philip Iselin Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on Aug. 20.
