Trainer Kenny McPeek will make a donation of $50 for each of his wins in 2009 to Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation, it was jointly announced Sept. 9 by McPeek and foundation president, Edward Bowen. The pledge is retroactive to July 1.

"We certainly appreciate Mr. McPeek stepping up to increase his support of equine research," said Bowen. "He already was a member of our Rokeby Circle level of donors, and this additional generosity further underscores his understanding that scientific research serves trainers and all others in the industry.

"We have some owners who give after each victory through our Share the Wins program, but this is the first time a trainer has come on board. I hope others will look at this as an appropriate way to help."

Note that donors at the Rokeby Circle level contribute $10,000 or more.

    Asmussen hits 5,000-win milestone

Steve Asmussen became the fifth trainer to win 5,000 races when Passion Rules easily won a $40,000 maiden claimer on Friday afternoon at Woodbine Race Course.

Sadler eyes third meet title in row

John Sadler won the Del Mar trainers' title for the second straight year, and he did it emphatically, winning 31 races, nearly twice as many as second-place Bob Baffert. His 25 percent strike rate for wins and 51 percent strike rate for in-the-money finishes was the best of any trainer in the top 10 when Del Mar's meet ended on Wednesday.

    [...]

Sadler helped raise $10,000 for a local elementary school, Solana Vista, an act that came to light only because Carrie D'Arcangelo, the mother of one of the children at the school, wanted Sadler to get credit.

"We auctioned off a day with John Sadler, and after we sold one for $5,000, another person wanted in, so we sold a second day with him for another $5,000," D'Arcangelo said.

    From brisnet.com

Jockey Chris Emigh will switch his tack to Keeneland and then Churchill Downs this fall after Arlington Park closes out its season September 27. Arlington's 2006 jockey champion, Emigh also holds multiple titles at Hawthorne. "Trying the Kentucky circuit is something I've always wanted to do," Emigh said. "It's been a dream of mine for some time, and I want to try it before I can't do it anymore. I want to try Keeneland and Churchill because they are both at historic racing sites, and they both would give me a better chance to pick up that good Derby mount one day while I'm still in my prime. It's going to be a little bit of a gamble for me to give up my comfort zone at Hawthorne because I know I would have an opportunity to make quite a bit of money there. Leaving a place where I have good business and going to a place where I have no business is stressing me out a little. My agent has already abandoned ship. Terry (Jaws) Miller will be my new agent. I have done better in my career than I ever thought possible, but I would still like to try to ride regularly at some of the more elite tracks before my career is over.".

Apprentice Matt Rispoli is in the hospital after having a car accident one morning a couple of weeks ago on his way to Penn National to work horses. He has a broken femur (which they operated on about a week or so) and multiple ankle injuries. The surgery for the ankle was yesterday afternoon. Fortunately, he was lucky and is not in the same position as Rene Douglas and Michael Straight.

Matt won his first race on a horse owned by his friend, forumite Roscommon, back in April at Pimlico. He got his 5th win on the same horse at Colonial. He rode all summer at Colonial Downs and had just moved from Laurel to be near his new agent, former rider Mike McCarthy, in the Fair Hill area where they were concentrating on building a base at Fair Hill, Delaware, Philly Park and Penn National.

Oh, hell. I remember the excitement here over the win on/for Roscommon's horse quite well. Will this surgery allow him to ride again professionally? They didn't have to fuse it or anything, did they?

I wish him all the best. He looks to have a lot of promise.

This is an old story (12/2007)but I thought it was interesting on Talamo and his split from Ebanks a couple of years ago. Wasn't there a battle here at TBC that time about how Talamo would sink without the Loveman? We were suppose to revisit the debate the next summer which would have been 2008...hm. Trying to recall who it was that took such a big stand.

Seems Joe has done ok to me.

Talamo has certainly won some big stakes this year but his win percentage is 11% and his ITM is 39%. Maybe his agent isn't getting him on enough good horses.

Disabled jockeys get piece of Gio Ponti's pot

Gio Ponti's Aug. 8 Arlington Million win was an unexpected windfall for the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. The colt's owner, Castleton Lyons, announced afterwards it would donate 5 percent of his winnings, or $29,400, to the fund, which currently aids 61 former jockeys with some medical and daily living expenses.

The historic Lexington farm presented the check Friday.

"It helps tremendously," said PDJF president Nancy LaSala. "We disburse approximately $63,000 a month in assistance. Gestures like this are phenomenal, because they signify ways different people can come in and support this."

Since its formation in 2006, the PDJF has provided more than $2 million to these injured riders, most of whom have brain injuries or paralysis. The PDJF eventually hopes to create a $14 million endowment, La Sala said.

The PDJF is a 501(c)(3) charity whose website is at www.pdjf.org.

    Update on Matt:

He's back home in New Jersey after two surgeries. They inserted a rod and six screws in his femur, and six screws were inserted in the ankle as well. He began physical therapy on Thursday afternoon and has to stay off the ankle for 10 weeks. Six to eight months recovery time is predicted.

The photos of his car are frightening. I was in the emergency room just a few hours after the accident, so I knew how serious his injuries were right away. Still, I was shocked when I saw the pictures. He is INCREDIBLY lucky to have walked away from this accident.

    Re: Jockey, Trainer Watch

Joel Rosario, the leading rider at Del Mar, has had a complaint filed against him by the California Horse Racing Board alleging he "did not put forward his best effort riding his horse to the finish line" in the final race at Del Mar on Sept. 6.

    . . . .

Rosario was aboard Cedros in the 11th race on Sept. 6, a maiden race at 1 1/16 miles on turf. Cedros, a 4-1 shot in the field of 10, battled outside another rival for the early lead through the first half-mile of the race, then, according to the race's official chart, "fell back some leaving the second turn and angled in, continued along the rail in the stretch and was edged for the show." He finished a head behind the third-place finisher, Never.

Cedros is trained by John Glenney and is owned by Glenney and his wife, Kim.

According to Glenney, he complained to the stewards about Rosario and his agent, Vic Stauffer, after Stauffer approached Glenney the morning after the race and asked if Cedros was for sale.

Ros, I heard that he hit a big rig, is that true? Gosh, I know his injuries aren't exactly pleasant but it could have been much worse.

I met Matt. He is a nice kid. I'm hoping he has a good, speedy recovery.
