Trainer Vann Belvoir riding high at Del Mar

At a place where feel-good tales happen every day around the running of beautiful thoroughbreds, Vann Belvoir’s opening week at the Del Mar Racetrack was storybook good.

On Monday, Craig Family Trust racing manager Ted Aroney hosted a gathering on the beach that was mostly tribute and partly roast for trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who will be inducted into Thoroughbred racing's Hall of Fame on August 12 in Saratoga Springs, New York. Trainer John Sadler was one of the speakers. "It's a black eye for racing that he was not in there earlier," Sadler said. "The knock has been that he did it all on the San Francisco circuit, but you look at his numbers and horses like Lite Light, King Glorious and now Blind Luck and there's no question he belongs." Sadler has known Hollendorfer for more than 30 years going back to the late 1970s when they both had a handful of horses and were racing on the Northern California circuit. At the gathering, Sadler presented a couple of observations regarding Hollendorfer. "He's bought more Hip No. 1 (first in the sales ring) horses than any other trainer," Sadler said. "Why? Because he doesn't want to get shut out. And also because he's very competitive, has done his homework and knows what he's looking for. He's also claimed a lot of horses from the last race on December 24, or whatever the date is before the Christmas break. Others might want to take off early, but he's always kept on working to the end." At the event, Sadler opined that the two greatest athletes produced in Akron, Ohio, were Hollendorfer and NBA superstar LeBron James. "Jerry says he's smarter than LeBron because he was able to get out of there sooner than LeBron was," Sadler said.

For the 13th time since 1992, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott celebrated his birthday by saddling a winner at Saratoga. On Friday, his 58th birthday, the honors came courtesy of Juddmonte Farms' REACH A DECISION (Aptitude), who broke his maiden in the 2ND race. The 12-1 shot paid a healthy $26.20 to bettors all over the Mott birthday angle.

Jockey Victor Espinoza donating a week's earnings to the grooms:

“Everybody has done a lot of things for different foundations, but I never hear about anybody doing something just for the grooms,” said Espinoza. “The grooms are important for everybody in horse racing; they take care of the horses more than anybody, sometimes 24 hours a day,” he continued. “If a horse gets sick at midnight, who’s going to be there? The groom has to get up. But if the grooms are sick, they can’t take care of the horses.”

Espinoza initially contacted Madeline Auerbach, an owner and longtime friend who recently accepted an appointment to the CTHF advisory board.

“Victor came to me and said, ‘I want to do something for the grooms. Can you help me do it?’ and I thought CTHF would be a good fit,” said Auerbach.

Jockey Terry Thompson broke his own record for victories in a Prairie Meadows Thoroughbred meet when he won Tuesday's 8TH race aboard Cat's Review (Cat Thief). The win was the 95th of the season for Thompson, who set his previous record of 94 wins in 2002. "That 94 has been there for a long time," Thompson said. "To break it is real exciting." Tuesday was the 64th racing day of a meet that ends Saturday, while Thompson's 2002 record was set in a 53-day season. However, he set the new record in 40 fewer races than in 2002. While he had 405 mounts in 2002, he reached 95 wins in 365 races this year as he has been winning at a record 26 percent rate. He is on track to break Vicki Warhol's 1994 winning rate of 25.3 percent and also to win his eighth Prairie Meadows riding title since 2000. "This is a tough business," Thompson said. "If you win 20 percent of your races, you're having a heck of a meet."

Chad Brown climbing standings and earnings list at Saratoga; Todd Pletcher impressed by 32-year-old

Chad Brown knows how to work the system.

It was taught to him by Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel and now the 32-year-old trainer is using it to his full advantage, saddling 14 winners through the first 22 days at Saratoga. Good enough for second place in the standings, behind only Todd Pletcher, who has 23.

    Re: Jockey, Trainer Watch

I'd sure like to know where Jerry Hollendorfer is after today in his march to 6,000 wins. He went into the Hall Of Fame last Friday with only 10 wins to go, but I haven't seen a countdown anywhere.

6,000 is HUGE! He will be only the 4th trainer in history to achieve that number, and it's so cool that it will come on the heels of his HOF induction. I really hope he does it this Saturday or Sunday so I can get to see it, even if just on simulcast.

I rarely bet on NoCal races, two reasons being, ironically, Hollendorfer and Baze. But I suspect that the two of them, combined and individually, don't have many bigger fans than I am of the both of them.

Get it done this weekend, Jerry......Pleeeeze!
