    From today's Bloodstock Journal:

Jockey Rafael Bejarano, seriously injured in a spill on Wednesday's opening day at Del Mar, has been released from the intensive care unit at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, California, and placed in a private room, according to Dr. John Agostino, a Del Mar track physician. Bejarano suffered multiple facial fractures in the accident and underwent surgery early Thursday to repair the damage. It's unknown when he might be released from the hospital..

Veteran trainer William Currin has decided to disband his racing operation in favor of devoting his energies to life as a breeder. Currin suffered what he says was a mild stroke several weeks ago and that hastened his decision, he said. He will offer breeding and racing stock beginning with the Keeneland September sale, as well as the November and January sales, if necessary.

Jockey Miguel Mena, winner of the July 30 Sanford Stakes aboard the Tom Amoss-trained Backtalk, will return to Kentucky Thursday. Mena?s hopes for a solid first meet at Saratoga were dashed when a drinking problem caused him to miss his flight to Mountaineer Race Track last Saturday and he conceded his mount aboard Soul Warrior, winner of the $750,000 West Virginia Derby. Today is Mena?s last day in New York; he?ll resume racing at Ellis Park over the weekend and will begin an intense outpatient treatment program for alcoholism, said his agent, Steve Elzey.

Norberto Arroyo Jr. was pulled over on a routine traffic stop near SAR Sunday morning for driving without a seat belt (and also, it turned out, driving on a suspended license) and found to be in possession of 12 grams of cocaine. He's been charged with possession and intent to sell, and is being held in lieu of $25K bail.

Jockey Rafael Bejarano, who suffered serious facial fractures in a spill at Del Mar on July 22, will be working horses at the seaside venue on Saturday as he prepares for his return to competition. Bejarano has been recuperating at his home in Del Mar, and when he returns will ride with a mask, much like those worn by some professional athletes.

Leading trainer Kirk Ziadie, jockey agent Richard Ciardullo, and Dr. Raul Jimenez (vet) have been banned from Calder Race Course:

CD isn't saying why. But Ziadie, currently tied with Marty Wolfson for leading trainer, is appealing a suspension for an Ace positive, and has had other med violations in the past.
