How terrible. My condolences to his family and friends. He was a pretty consistent winner at Finger Lakes but clearly had very serious problems. Very sad.

This is where I get confused. You have 3 children, and a woman you want to be your wife. A reasonable career. You up and kill yourself? I have a hard time with this...He must have had some serious demons...

Manic depression, or it's modern name of bi polar disorder can bring you so low that you feel there is no escape. The pain is unbearable to them and they are masters at hiding it. Sooner or later you will encounter it and it never makes sense. I have a friend who was married to a man who waited until she went away and then killed himself. She has never gotten over the guilt of having missed all the signs but there were none to be "seen".

It's because it's not reasonable. There's nothing reasonable or rational about mental illness. A person in their right frame of mind just doesn't do that. Unfortunately, we can't apply any of the rational applications or solutions we have in our minds to whatever was preying on this young man. It's so tragic that he couldn't or didn't at least reach out somehow for help (I have no idea of his history, if he had tried treatment before or what) before taking this step; if not for his own sake but for the sake of his children and family. But mental illness can rob you of even that much presence of mind. Heartbreaking. I really feel for his loved ones.

There's still the stigma associated with mental illness ... probably so much more for a professional jockey.

My condolences to all his family and friends.

Re: David Osorio - Another Suicide

Many years ago I had a friend who committed suicide. He was an orphan at 4, brought up in an orphanage, worked his way through college, and then law school, and then worked for a prestigious maritime law firm in NJ. He had the world by the tail. He was handsome, brilliant, and possessed a kind and loving soul. He had a beautiful home, a Mercedes-Benz, a horse, he rode hunt in Bedminster, and was a hot bachelor prospect.

He dressed himself in his riding clothes, attached a vacuum cleaner hose to the tail pipe of his Mercedes and the other end in the window, got in the car, closed the windows, turned on the engine, and he was gone.

He left a simple note on the dashboard - "I ran out of springtimes."

His world of friends and acquaintances were in shock - none of us expected it. Yet that simple note explained it all. He struggled all his life to acquire what he had. He ran out of struggles and had nothing to look forward to and so, in his mind, he ran out of springtimes. It didn't make sense to any of us, but it did to him.

Condolances to the family and friends of Mr Osorio.

Re: David Osorio - Another Suicide

As Blue Jeans said, There's still the stigma associated with mental illness, many people living with a mental illness of any kind often feel there is no hope for them, they often do not feel that they will be able to hold down a job because that is what society has projected onto them, as they get older they may even begin to see themselves as their diagnosis ie "Hi I'm Joe the Schizophrenic" but there *IS* hope and there *IS* recovery, it can be found by reaching out to NAMI (National Association of Mental Illness).

Just a year ago I didn't feel there was any hope at all, I live with PTSD, Depression and Anxiety; then a social worker told me about NAMI and introduced me to a woman that has been involved with the Fairbanks chapter since it started.

    Condolences to David's family
