I had put a bid in on an NG season last year in one of the state run auctions but given that I would have to pay for it four months before my mare was going to foal AND there was a chance that if she went late I would only have one chance to get her back in foal I decided against it. Of course the bid was quite a bit lower than what I would have had to pay with a guaranteed foal contract but the money I would have saved would have made it worthwhile. I would not have submitted my mare though until after she had foaled so that way if I could not use the season I would have tried to do a foal share.

It does seem that the later in the season the more availability there is to some of the stallions so I'd think you would be able to get in when you want and need to.

I do have a small discount if I pay for my mare's season by November 1 and that will be dependent upon my financial situation and when she's due. That would essentially reduce the tax due on sperm.

With this type of NG season, would the stud farm require the mare be named and booked with signed contract in advance? Or would they allow you to wait until the last possible few months, in case your mare does not drop her foal early, and you have another open broodmare you could substitute to ensure the NG is used and the chances of getting a live foal increased?

An NG season by definition is No Guarantee of a Foal. Typically you've already paid for it, (such as you would if you bid it to win in a charity auction), you can now send a billy goat and they have to breed it. Depends of course on the specific required terms of the NG contract, the quality of stallion, but there is a presumed value attached and also that if you paid good money for NG, you won't really send a billy goat.

The type of season that Tap refers to is not an NG, it is a live foal season that is issued on contract to an approved mare, and a discount (typically 10%) applies if you pay it in November vs. waiting til the foal drops the following spring, S+N. Your mare should be pronounced in foal, and most farms check again in the fall for the sales and before paying early fees, although most contracts call for a refund if the mare fails to foal a healthy foal that stands and nurses (unless the contract specifically called for a breed back the following season instead.) Some don't check the mare again and save the palp fee in the fall, figuring they can tell if she is still preggers by then;-)

Substituting mares on an approved live season contract is based on relationship and stallion mgr. decision.

Just ask for a deal (offer the NG price = 65-70% of live foal season) and say you aren't signing a live foal contract tll you are sure you are breeding her. If it is popular stallion, you might not get to do that, if not so popular (the kind still avail to book in May), then you name that tune. But you had better leave time for them to get her on the books and have all her vet work in order.

Menifee, 2nd leading stallion in S. Korea last year, has had surgery to remove "stones from his urinary tract" and will probably miss part of the 2012 breeding season. Two U.S. vets flew over to assist in the surgery.

That's very sad news.
The cause of his death has yet to be officially confirmed at the current moment, though.
Chichicastenango(FR), only 14 years old, was a popular stallion standing at Shadai Stallion station since he had been imported from France. He covered some bests of Sunday Silence-line mares including my daughter Daiwa Scarlet. His first crop in Japan will make their debut later this year.

Mexico races a bunch of them in match races and in the backwaters, too, and they have a bunch of our fast one hit wonders down there, at least for a minute.

Now interestingly he was owned partly and trained by horse rescue advocate Contessa, right?
