Re: Profiles: TBC handicappers - join in

NAME : CAT or Lady Cat (your choice)

HOME TRACK:
Arapahoe Park which is so far from me and has very low level horses I have never bothered to go!

Used to go to GULFSTREAM when Living in Florida....

First horse racing wager:
When I was just a teen, My parents would take me and give me a $20 to bet all the races...$2 on each to win...
they were often SHOCKED & Amazed at how often I WON

STRENGTHS:
My innane ability to choose LONGSHOTS!

Even I do not understand this 'Intuition' ability~
I have had it all my life!

As a child I would pick names from the local paper and check next day to see who won, 2, 3...
I had a lot of them, even then ~
without any INFO/stats or knowledge!

I have never used racing form info, PP's or stats in any contest or at real track/OTB betting

I go by:
NAME OF HORSE (that 'calls' to me)
Never play a horse with GOLD in name

GRAYS: Gray Obsession!
SIRE (offspring of my Fave Sires)

I never bet on any under 8--1
Winning $5 is no big thrill to me!

WEAKNESS:
My Heart SOARS at the sight of a GRAY
but..
have lost b/c they do not win that day

I cannot resist betting on one!

However over time, they pay off BIG for me as well:
BLACK TIE AFFAIR
GIACOMO
LIT DE JUSTICE
ItsAllGreekToMe
HOLY BULL
SKIP AWAY
IZVESTIA
FLY TILL DAWN
ONE DREAMER
etc etc etc

MOST important handicapping factor
Once again for ME, tis the
NAME, THE GRAYS, THE SIRE!
AND HIGH ODDS!

LEAST important handicapping factor:
OWNER, Trainer, Jockey, STATS

YOUR favorite wagering pool:
Boxed Exacta

Favorite Handicapping Book
NEVER READ ONE
NEVER WILL

I fly by my own inner Intuition with the 'Horse Racing Goddess' guiding me...
Somehow for ME ~ that often works!
Strange as it sounds...

I have won most of the last 15 Derbys
other than NOT betting on---
Street Sense, Smarty, War Emblem, Barbaro...Lil ET, Strike the gold or go for gin...

as well as having longshots like
Sarava = Belmont @ 70-1
(Name called to me)

One Dreamer in Distaff: 47--1 (gray)

Giacomo: 50-1 (GRAY of Holy Bull)

Wild Syn: 30-1 (Love Wild Again!)

Often bet on one by Distorted Humor also & some sires whom I have loved in the past....

The Handicapping Forum can be improved by:

Perhaps a mid week CYBERBUCKS OR..
A SUNDAY added Cyberbucks in addition
to regular Saturday one

I think the forum is great
I see no room for improvement...
just additions ;-)))

GIANT KUDOS TO ALL WHO PROVIDE THE CONTESTS AND SCORE THEM!
Your consistent dedication is very much appreciated!

And Dance Smartly and Chief Bearheart kept the respectability years intact.

But Canada needs a truly huge star to make it on the international stage. That just might happen within 5 years I'll venture.

Re: Profiles: TBC handicappers - join in

name: Julie

home racetrack: Golden Gate(closest major), Cal Expo, Sacramento(closest to my home)

year of your first horse racing wager: approximately 1977(yep, my mom used to let us pick a horse and buy the ticket for us) That's the year my mom married my step-dad. He was a trainer at the time. He mostly did fair circuit stuff and he trained both Thoroughbreds and Quarters, so I saw alot of the tracks here in the west and loved every minute of it. There's not a better place to grow up, if you love horses that is!

strengths: I've been paying attention to the hotter jockeys and trainers at the different tracks and jockey/trainer combos that are on fire at the moment. I've done okay lately with making my choices that way.

weaknesses: On the internet, I tend to make a fair amount of my choices by the name(s) I like the most. When I'm at the track, I tend to pick a horse by choosing the one I think looks the best. Obviously, those aren't the two best ways to make choices.

most important handicapping factor is:

least important handicapping factor is:

your favorite wagering pool: It used to be WPS, but thanks to these contests, I'm learning how to do a little more of the fancy stuff!

favorite handicapping book / author: I have honestly never read a handicapping book or article.

The Handicapping Forum can be improved by: Getting more people involved. I can honestly say, if someone comes here and plays, just once, they'll get hooked. Make sure you tell your invitees that even if they bomb, no one will make fun of them. Yeah, I was a bit afraid of that myself. The support here is wonderful.

WEAKNESS:

name: John

home racetrack: Cut my teeth on the now declining MD circuit, but concentrate mostly on NY these days.

year of your first horse racing wager: '72 or thereabouts.

strengths: A keen understanding of class.

weaknesses: Probably not knowing, or caring, enough about trainers.

most important handicapping factor is: CLASS.

least important handicapping factor is: Weight, I guess. You can also have too much information sometimes. Keep it simple.

your favorite wagering pool: Win & exacta in a dead heat!

favorite handicapping book / author: A quaint old paperback from 1948 called The ABC of Horse Racing, by Dan Parker. Cover scan at the link...

The Handicapping Forum can be improved by: Too new to say. I like what I've seen, though. Didn't know places like this existed.

Wow that is ancient !
I hope modern libraries do not stock handicapping literature that was printed 60 years ago.
The game has changed quite a bit in the last 5 years, let alone six decades.

I've read pretty much all of the older books circa 1970's and 1980's.
This Dan Parker author I've never even heard of up until now.

I'm guessing he was the Tom Ainslie of his day.
So it might be worth a couple of bucks just to travel back in time.
While I'm at it, I think I'll grab some works of the legendary Pittsburgh Phil also.

What goes around comes around.

Parker was a long time editor and general sports columnist with the old NY Daily Mirror. Probably best remembered for writing about baseball and boxing, he was also instrumental in exposing the fakery in pro wrestling at a time most fans believed it was on the level.

Re: Profiles: TBC handicappers - join in

name: Rhonda
home racetrack: Arapahoe Park, the sinking ship. But my true home track was Centennial, the previous track in Littleton, CO. Torn down in 1983, my family trained horses there since the '60's. My mom has 1 more homebred that she races. He's just a $10K claimer, but I've never seen a horse love his job so much! He's getting ready for his 2008 summer season

year of your first horse racing wager: 1974, when I was 8 years old, running around with my friend Lonnie, the son of one of Colorado's top jockeys at the time. During the fair circuit in the summers, racing on all of the various bush tracks, we would go to the door that was the employees entrance to the windows and knock. The head of the pari-mutuals was "Fast Eddie" who looked a little bit like Mutton Chops, would open the door, and take our little $2 bets on the horses that we liked after studying the PP's together and listening to which horses our parents had been talking about!

strengths: An eye for horse flesh in the paddock and post parade, and picking who is ready to run big, and who isnt. Thats why picking early, before I can see them, is tougher for me.

weaknesses: Many. Either under, or over-analyzing, depending on the race.

most important handicapping factor is: Class and training patterns/preparedness

least important handicapping factor is: Weight...I never look at that, right or wrong, except maybe a routing filly race.

your favorite wagering pool: Win pool, I suppose....I dont bet a great deal of money per race usually, but I do bet every weekend. Horse racing is in my blood, and is my passion!

favorite handicapping book / author: I've never read a handicapping book....too lazy/impatient and/or busy reading the actual DRF! :cheesy:

The Handicapping Forum can be improved by: I dont think it can be. I think everyone here, the hosts, scorekeepers and contestants are great, and its a pleasure playing with you all.
