Not happy about Wilburn (unless he came out of the race with an injury).

I get the feeling Wilburn isn't the soundest critter.

I am so sick of young 3yo males retiring. I think for now on I will only follow girls and cut boys. It's so frustrating.

What? This makes NO sense............If he's hurt, it's one thing. If he's not, that's just ridiculous. Ugh.........

Thanks, B Wayne Hughes. A horse who should have only gotten better is now going the way of his sire.

I got over AP Indy a long time ago; I was upset, but not NEARLY as upset as I was when Bernardini was retired. I'm pissed off at Hughes and Stonestreet.

Only because Bernardinis fee doubled. Mr Hughes saw the shot and took it. He did the same with Warriors Reward, being the first son of M D'Oro to retire. Which was a huge hit with breeders. So look for the same reaction for Wilburn, being the first son of Bernardini to retire

The difference is the Warrior's Reward was four, Wilburn is three.

That is true. But did M D'Oro really sire a good 3 yo son? All of his best runners have been fillies at that point. Hill N Dale did the same with a Tapit son, Concord Point. Tapit is better known as a sire of fillies. Congrats and Malibu Moon also fit the "filly sire" mold. Im honestly not banking on Congrats, Malibu Moon, Tapit or M D'Oro to be a sire of good sires. Bernardini's sons have excelled beyond the fillies. I think he will have sons that will do something at stud

Well this is a load of sh!t. I actually liked Wilburn, too.

God, this game gets so boring sometimes, what with so many uncut colts/horses going to the shed unless they're of lesser quality.

You said it! What the h#ll has this horse done to be retired as a three year old???? He could have been an awesome four year old, but this year he won all of a few races. Well, he won two grade 2 races, and then finished like 6th in the BC. Let's retire him anyway. He has done everything we asked of him GRRRRRRR

Am I the only one who thinks there might be more to this than a cash grab?? Banke/Stonestreet aren't the type to do the wrong thing-I'm guessing something's up with Wilburn physically that hasn't been disclosed yet. I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt for now.

Re: Wilburn and Victor's Cry retired

I'm with you Flower. Wilburn must have some physical issues that are keeping them from going on with him. I know he's a rather large colt and had no 2YO year, although he did do the breeze up sale as a 2YO and that probably about ruined him.

Have a look at the roster that Spendthrift is putting together. Is there any other farm out there with so many freshman sires planning to hit the sheds. Archarcharch, Dublin, Paddy O Prado, Tizway, Wilburn, Court Vision, Victor's Cry.. heck, when you look at their roster as a whole the only PROVEN commodity they have is Malibu Moon. The rest barely have foals on the ground or have a crop racing.

Re: Wilburn and Victor's Cry retired

People who loved him going into the BC said he seemed a lil off on BC day. My guess is, there was a physical issue that sprung out of the race.

I do hear he's the most like his father physically out of all the Bernardini's so far.

Hmm, an oversize horse who couldn't stand training consistently. . .pass, pass, pass.
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

Re: Wilburn and Victor's Cry retired

Re: Spendthrift, when I was out there in 2009 they had just a handful of stallions and were doing some upgrading to the Nashua Motel ... in a way it's disappointing to see the quality of stallions they've filled it up with since then, can't say Temple City, Line of David, Notional, Into Mischief and now Wilburn are very exciting. Guess I always harken back to the Leslie Combs days when the stallion lineup there was chock-full of top runners and sires. I guess there's a chance one of these horses could hit a homerun, but not very optimistic about that.

Re: Wilburn and Victor's Cry retired

I could say that when I was at Spendthrift in 1991 there were quite a few horses that seemed out of place. I seem to recall if nobody had room in Kentucky this was the farm to send your horse if its name was Manastash Ridge or Nordic Legend. They also had Mehmet, General Assembly, Sham, Time For A Change, J.O. Tobin, Foolish Pleasure, Red Attack, Marshua's Dancer (who had boards in the back of his paddock so he could not see his neighbor), and a few others that I can't remember off the top of my head. I think Yukon had moved by then but I think Night Shift was still around.
