Re: Mondays at Saratoga?

Pretty sure the steady decline in annual foal crops and starts made per horse had a lot to do with the decision, too. Nobody wants to go to Saratoga and see a bunch of six-horse races, as is so often the case at Aqueduct, not to mention Delaware, Finger Lakes, and many other tracks. Dropping a day f...

Re: Jockey/Trainer News - 2019

WNBB: You realize that story is 17 years old and Arroyo has already done his time, right? Oops. I missed the date on that article, which showed up on a racing site as though it were 'new' news. Thanks for the correction. It does provide some insight into his background...and his anger issues...

Joe Jernigan, who rode for a few years in the '90s, primarily at Delta Downs, has died after a spill at a fair track in Mississippi. Who knew they had horse racing in Mississippi!

Re: Jockey/Trainer News - 2019

Looks like Arroyo is facing more trouble than just some suspensions by racing stewards. JOCKEY ARROYO ARRESTED Jockey Norberto Arroyo Jr. was arrested at Belmont Park on Friday afternoon for an incident that occurred in a pool hall that sent one victim to the hospital with serious head inju...

Re: Waiting for news on ...

"Collapsed" and "failed to fully revive" sounds like either some sort of cardiac event or extreme reaction to the very warm day. I saw a lot of horses being vigorously hosed down as soon as their saddles came off, so I wonder if heat and/or humidity were factors. :( I saw a tweet quoting the vet th...

Re: DRF ?

Sad if true, but I haven't bought the full print edition of the Form for a few years now and only read the few articles online that are available through the free basic registration with the website. As a strictly recreational horseplayer, I find the past performances in the $6.50 Daily Racing Progr...

Re: Saratoga 2019

Why didn't they just postpone the Lake George? G3 had a 3 horse field... Probably because the scratched horses were declared too late to do anything with the race but run it with a three-horse field. There was a maiden turf mile for 2yos at Laurel this afternoon that scratched down from eight horse...

Re: Saratoga 2019

The social media pressure on Monmouth to cancel is pretty crazy. I'm not sure if I've seen anything like it. At least, for racing. Of course most of them are from silly people who can't spell or type of sentence . Ignorance goes a long, long ways though and it's killed things bigger than racing. Oh...

Re: Saratoga 2019

With so many other tracks having already canceled for Saturday, it would be against human nature for Monmouth management to look at this and not think "Let's run and have the East Coast bettors all to ourselves for a day." Maybe horsemen/jockeys advising them that they will refuse to run/ride under ...

Re: Saratoga 2019

To quote Mark Twain, Saturday will be "hot enough to melt brass doorknobs" and I'm sure the industry is being especially careful these days. Better safe than sorry is the new credo in TB racing. Always should have been. I'll be extremely curious to see how Monmouth handles this situation on their v...

On or Off the turf?
Thunderstorms likely Friday, Saturday and Sunday look nice -- as do Monday and Tuesday, which figures because both are dark. Rain returns Thursday. It's the same old song....

King Abdullah of Jordan is her brother. Just was saying that it wasn't like she was an american marrying into a middle eastern family with totally different customs. She herself is the offspring of King Hussein of Jordan ........with his "3rd wife". The daughter of a ruler, marrying a ruler. I susp...

Re: The End of Suffolk Downs

Didn't realize the grandstand would be closed from now on. Everyone watched the first race after the thunderstorm from the seats, and for a minute or two it was easy to imagine what hte crowd must have looked back when all of those seats were filled. No longer though. I asked what would happen to a...

Re: The End of Suffolk Downs

If I heard TD Thornton's announcement correctly, the gate wasn't out of place. It wasn't working, and the other gate, the one used for route races, had to be pulled over to take its place. This led to Thornton's memorable ad lib a few minutes later: "Ladies and gentlemen, the starting gate has reach...

I don't have time to read the whole article, but does he ever point out that almost ALL racing in Europe and Asia is done on grass? Which is safer for horses? Comparing the injury records of American vs. international racing is sort of apples to oranges. :? Also, I don't think Europe -- at l...

Why would it move? PETA protests. Anti-racing signs and banners being smuggled in and getting on camera at inopportune times. Who knows, there may still be time to get a horse racing ban on the November ballot as a referendum. I don't think you'd see much if any of this in Kentucky. Why wouldn't ra...

Re: The End of Suffolk Downs

The forecast for both days is useless -- "50 percent chance" of "scattered thunderstorms." That tells me next to nothing, not even if it will be an OK day with half a chance of a pop-up storm or a showery, gray day with half a chance of the steady rain turning into a full-blown thunderstorm. It's li...

The Coventry goes to Arizona, a big, handsome son of No Nay Never. I think I heard this was Aiden O'Brien's 9th victory in this race. The dark brown colt seemed a little lazy in the first half of the race, but came with a strong charge in the last furlong. Love the fact that he runs in what looks l...
