Re: Suburban at Belmont

They took it slow with this horse and it's nice to see it paying off. He was fantastic today. 108 beyer and it looks like the sky is the limit. Catholic Boy ran fine, it was a savvy move to move for the lead on that slow pace, but in two starts this year it doesn't quite feel like he's made the nece...

Re: The Belmont Derby

Not sure how to diagnose this... https://twitter.com/sidgustafson/status/1147631339564359681 A remarkably irresponsible tweet. DMSO is used for a ton of things and the horse got a perfect groundsaving trip after a season of troubled ones. DMSO absolutely should not be used without reason, but wild ...

Re: The End of Suffolk Downs

Ah, that makes sense. I couldn't really hear the announcements from the rail (although I did hear that comment, which was great). The lines were really bad and I did most of my betting through my phone (what a world we live in), but I still got some souvenir bets in for the last race, by which point...

Re: The End of Suffolk Downs

Today was so much better, and ended up serving as a pretty fitting metaphor for the track itself. Beautiful sunny skies for the first few races gave way to another thunderstorm early in the card, and the lightning and heavy rain drove everyone indoors and had us worrying about yet another cancellati...

Re: The End of Suffolk Downs

Doesn't sound like a very pleasant day. RIP Royal Ransom - who happened to be in my VS. WarBiscuit Ugh, I'm sorry. Suffolk has always had a fantastic safety record and I've never seen an injury there before, but that doesn't matter after the fact. And sorry to hear that other tracks had to deal wit...

Re: The End of Suffolk Downs

Well that was... a day. It was horribly hot and humid, there was a bad breakdown in front of the stands early on (of a horse my mother picked out in the post parade...), then there was a thunderstorm so insanely severe that it caused a power outage, flooded the track, and led to the cancellation of ...

The End of Suffolk Downs

The Track That Wouldn't Die draws its final breath this weekend. Large fields, a lot of familiar faces, and a few final stakes races will close out New England racing for the foreseeable future. Hoping the rain holds off and we get nice weather for the finale.

Who's going?

Re: Royal Ascot 2019

"He has nothing left to prove" is always such an unsatisfying basis for retirement, but after that past week I suppose this is as close as one can get to justifying it. Wishing him the best in retirement.

Re: 2019 Three-Year-Olds

No love for Owendale here? I think he's very good and better the longer he goes. He strikes me very much as a Travers/JCGC/Classic horse and may be the main competitor for 3yo champion along with Tacitus if he stays sound.

Re: Santa Anita 2019

And just as a side note.... Baffert has an appropriately named 2YO filly making her first start in the second race.... "We're Still Here" ;) Wasn't there a trainer that had 7 horses die in like 18 months with no real explanation at Santa Anita a while back? I forget the name. Um excuse me they did ...

Re: Santa Anita 2019

I think it's possible that Hollendorfer both deserves it AND is being scapegoated by the track to deflect from issues caused by their surface. It's not likey they can ban all of the open secrets on the backstretch, they have races to fill. I wish it all felt like something more than futile attempts ...

Re: The VENT Thread

Eh I don't really blame the doctors, everything just sounds worse when you're venting. The issue has bounced around between quite a few of them and I'm lucky enough to get care across a number of ridiculously good institutions. Unfortunately, it's just something that can't be confirmed either way wi...

Re: The VENT Thread

Thought I was getting minor surgery on Monday, but got a call today that it was canceled because I don't need surgery right now, but I might need major surgery in the future, because they probably identified what's going on and it's probably normal but also it could be cancer. Oh, and the mass is wa...

Re: Royal Ascot 2019

I thought Kimari ran a remarkable race on that ground. In some of the larger fields, horses towards the back came back looking like they'd run on mud. Greatly enjoying the week so far, and I'm looking forward to seeing Maven run tomorrow! Ward seems to be really high on him, and that's a good sign....

Re: Royal Ascot 2019

Johnny V has been suspended nine days for overuse of the whip; unclear whether that will affect any upcoming mounts at this meet. I thought Kimari ran a remarkable race on that ground. In some of the larger fields, horses towards the back came back looking like they'd run on mud. So nothing to be he...

Re: 2019 Three-Year-Olds

Is that the first time Maximum Security was pressured/eyeballed by another horse? I’d say he needed the race, but also if he had never had another horse dog him, maybe he needed to know what that’s like? He was sort of pressed in the Derby, but I suspect this was by far the fastest pace he has ever...

Re: 2019 Three-Year-Olds

Maximum Security finished second by about a length to King for a Day.

Max stumbled briefly at the start, raced on his wrong long for at least the opening furlong, and didn't have much left late. I wonder if West rescinds his $5 million challenge now... more likely he's retired, though.

Goldencents has a good one!

Mr. Money and By My Standards are dead ringers for each other. I wonder how many Goldencents offspring look that much like him.
