This is just the laziest kind of journalism. I've lost all respect fot the L.A. Times, which recently ran an article sympathetically describing the ludicrous spectacle of PETA and sympathizers meeting on the steps of an area slaughterhouse to offer "comfort" to the hogs.

it seems that these were legal immigrants under a "need" program. I really don't want to think that squeaky clean Chad was skimming a few bucks from their powerlessness. In this country we skate on cheap labor in crappy jobs--would it be a disaster to spend 20 cents more per pound for chicken thighs?

If they're going to offer guaranteed slots for Japan and Europe (not to mention the UAE Derby) why not include one for the highest-ranked filly? Well, because there isn't a potential "bet on fillies" market to be mined. Otherwise it would make just as much sense.

Thanks for the anecdote, Curtis--Quack was a son of my first favorite, T.V. Lark. I was touched to hear Caton Bredar say recently that perhaps her all-time favorite was another offspring of T.V. Lark, the wonderful gray filly Pink Pigeon!
