Re: California Chrome to contest Hollywood Derby

I would argue that being mad at racing is realist, and moreso when you've been paid to work in it in any capacity. Didn't mean to imply your view was not realist. But the happy go lucky view is not, per se. Oh trust me, this sport pisses me off like no other. There's a reason I don't post as much a...

Re: California Chrome to contest Hollywood Derby

I would rather read a realist perspective than not. The horse should have been in the Clark. If anyone objects that much just put the two of us on ignore. We're used to an A and B convo and prefer social isolation. I'd like to think what I wrote above was a realist perspective as well, just a diffe...

Re: California Chrome to contest Hollywood Derby

I'm usually right there with the tempered response after a race like this against the blind fanboyism, but this is a case where I have no problem with either the choice of races or the owners' potential motivations for running here. As far as I can see, there were two risks they could have taken: ru...

Re: Ebola

Does that mean if someone tests negative for Ebola, it is a definitive determination that they don't harbor the virus? If that's the case, would that nullify the concern over a 21-day incubation period? This is kind of down to the level of detection for the assay the labs use for ebola, which would...

Re: Texas Red...... WOOOOOOOW

Texas Red is a fluorescent dye that I use very often in my work. No idea if he's named after it, but I really hope so and it's one reason I like him so much. There's several doctors among his owners so it's totally possible he was actually named for the dye, I'M SO UNREASONABLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS. ...

Re: MLB News & Notes

Shocks me even more the Nats were able to get to him early in the series (though that was as much Bumgarner's own fault with the error as anything else). Congrats to the Giants. Also glad to see Morse play a big part in this one, as I always liked him while he was with the Nationals.

Re: The VENT Thread

I lost my funding for my PhD program, and ever since I've been battling severe depression and "impostor syndrome" (that's where you're convinced you don't belong, are actually really stupid, etc. while in college). I mean, I felt betrayed and then like I had messed up. But I'm now convinced it's so...

Re: What Are You Reading?

FMA was one of the first animes I watched (outside of Akira and Voltron), so it threw me off that the manga ended up diverging so much from the anime itself. I ended up preferring the manga/second anime series, though the initial version wasn't exactly terrible. Digging Attack on Titan myself right ...

Re: What Are You Reading?

Another book, and a question: does it make me a bad person for thinking The Kite Runner was cheap and not particularly well written? Or is this the point at which I have to admit to myself that I'm a book snob?

Re: What Are You Reading?

This dropped off the front Horsin' Around page, which means we all have our priorities wrong.

Read The 25th Hour (Benioff (speaking of Game of Thrones)) and The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat (Sacks) this week, both excellent.

Life At Zen wrote:I completely agree with this... quarantine the infected countries. Unfortunately getting the cooperation of those countries to implement something like that... probably not possible.
Much less guaranteeing the people in those countries follow it.

THE PRESIDENT of MEXICO and THE PRIME MINISTER of Belize have denied entry of ship carry Ebola. You mean YOUR President can't do same and close entry to US for those trying to get here for treatment? Re: Ebola

Well good thing no one asked you to ;) I bought the book up months ago. It's definitely not really comparable. More just dislike the idea of being helpless in any situation. I would probably rather die than only be stuck to eating that stuff in a Costco survival tub anyway. Forgot you had done that...

Re: Ebola

So you're saying I shouldn't order a one year emergency supply from Costco? ;) I know they have those tubs-o-food at Costco (precooked rice/beans/oats/etc). I've thought to get a cabin before and would consider having one of those containers in there in case of emergency (snow-in, for instance), bu...

Re: Ebola

That is excessive. But. Every since I read The Stand I have had an incredicly profound reaction to such things. Mostly because I'm not sure what my psych BA and my ability to pander to rich people would do for me. Ay. I can care for a horse, and can shoot a gun. I don't know what outside plants to ...

Swill? OK - it's time for you to retract your claws. Sham, so I won't have to respond in kind to your nonsensical accusations. And I am truly sorry if I gave anyone cause for concern by entitling this thread grief. Bill has been doing so well for such a long time now that I don't even think about i...

I have to tell you, Bal, that when I first saw the title of this thread my heart dropped as I thought something dreadful had happened to Bill. I was relieved, for sure, when I realized it was not about Bill. Funny -- this was the same reaction I had before I clicked on this thread. I think that's p...

But that's my point -- there is nothing to debate there. It's purified internet bile, which is a conclusion that requires almost no analysis.
