From the minority opinion desk.....

When any horse has proven to be an over-achiever, accomplished everything thrown their way, fulfilled every dream the connections ever had, I suggest not getting greedy.
Winning a few more races ain't gonna change her legacy one damn bit.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

I mean, the headline of Winx racing in 2019 makes it sounds like they are trying to get one more season out of her, when that really isn't the case. They are planning on finishing this season with her, which makes complete sense. Just because their biggest races are in the spring doesn't mean that it is standard to retire a horse halfway through the Summer. That's America's specialty.

I don't see how it is greedy to finish the season, or at least return her to training and see if she still has her usual zest.

When she retires and her owners have her covered every season, then we'll start seeing the claims of greed. From Facebook fans at least  . Though Winx fans don't seem half as nuts as Zenyatta fans.

Winx had her first trial of the season this morning (she rarely wins trials)

So are trials not counted as a regular race? I’ve not heard of trials before in thoroughbred racing. I know Standardbreds use heats for some races. Are these just souped up workouts or what?

No, they don't count as races. They are pretty much group timed workouts. They are very common in Australia... and Hong Kong as well I believe.

They also have them in March at The Aiken Training Track in South Carolina. As far as I know, those are the only ones held in the US or maybe just the most well known since they have been having them since 1942. They are just workouts but give the horses the added experience of everything involved with racing.
In Winx's case you can see the cones, only used during training, on the track to maintain the inner part of the turf course for real racing. Winx isn't asked for a lot in her trials and she has rarely won them. They might ask her for a little more as she comes closer to her return to racing.

Thanks for the information. Learn something new everyday! I think it’s kinda cool way to train horses.

well, did Winx win or lose? I cannot find one word about her race even in the Racing Post: I fell asleep and did not watch the race. I would think even a loss would be huge news but I cannot find one word about her race last night

Jockey’s warning as Winx returns at Randwick on Saturday
Jockey Hugh Bowman admits Winx’s first race of the year comes at her most vulnerable distance as the champion mare returns in Saturday’s 1400m Group Two Apollo Stakes at Randwick

“The 1400m I think is her most vulnerable distance,” Bowman said. “It’s the only distance that she feels at some point in the race ‘oh is she at her top already’. That’s a small feeling I get.”

But trainer Chris Waller has enough proof to be confident what Winx does in the last part of her races is superior to any other horse — and puts his trust in Bowman to navigate the first part of her races safely.

The champion has been known to cause a few heart flutters by missing the start or seemingly getting in bad positions but as time goes on, Bowman is unflappable.

11:50 tonight ET. TVG will carry the race. I am so nervous, as it is not her best distance.
Go, Winx!

I'm always nervous when she runs, but there's no way I'm not watching it. Go Winx!

It's times like this that not having TVG really sucks. I love watching that mare kick in her afterburners.
And by the time I once again have my own TV/satellite service, I think Winx is going to be retired. :(
Phooey.
Maybe one of the racing sites will have a replay I can watch on my computer.

On the plus side, without TVG you don't have to listen to that awful Candice Hare. Why did anyone think it was a good idea to put her on television?

This is the TVG replay, but it's just the stretch run. The TAB link I posted above has the whole race.
