What’s the status on Almond Eye? I’m new to Japanese racing but she’s captured my heart <3

tachyon may know more, but the most recent twitter news was that she's still on the farm, she had a summer rest and is back in training for the Tenno Sho.

ALMOND EYE went to the spelling farm on the 12th.
Will have a good long rest through the summer then straight into the October 27 G1 2000m Tenno Sho at Tokyo #JRA

Almond Eye(JPN)(Lord Kanaloa) now works on the uphill training track at Northern Farm in Fukushima five days a week.
She might return to the Training Center in Miho in a few weeks to have bullet works with her trainer Sakae Kunieda to prepare for her start in the G1 Tenno Sho Autumn 2000m turf at Tokyo on Oct 27th 2019.
It sonds like that most of the top middle distance horses in Japan are pointed to that race to take on the reigning Horse of the Year.
The Tenno Sho Autumn is going to be a must-watch race!!!!

We have seen two eye-popping performances in JRA graded races today.
Both winners set new track records, one of which is a new country record!

-- replay of the G2 Centaur Stakes 1200m turf at Hanshin
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jI6znUwPCVk
1st. (#7) Tower of London(JPN) C4. Raven's Pass(USA) x Snow Pine(GB) x Dalakhani(IRE) 1:06.7 (track record)
2nd. (#6) Fantasist(JPN) C3. Lord Kanaloa(JPN) x Deep in Ask(JPN) by Deep Impact(JPN)
3rd. (#4) Iberis(JPN) F3. Lord Kanaloa(JPN) x Celebrar(JPN) by Boston Harbor(USA)

-- replay of the G3 Keisei Hai Autumn Handicap 1600m turf at Nakayama
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OjDZ1O26Hg
1st. (#10) Trois Etoiles(JPN) F4. Lord Kanaloa(JPN) x Secondo Piatto(JPN) by Heart's Cry(JPN) 1:30.3 (national record)
2nd. (#11) Dimension(JPN) M5. Deep Impact(JPN) x Miss Pemberley(IRE) by Montjeu(IRE)
3rd. (#2) Gendarme(USA) C4. Kitten's Joy(USA) x Believe(JPN) by Sunday Silence(USA)

Lord Kanaloa fillies now hold country records of both 2400m turf (set by Almond Eye) and 1600m turf (set by Trois Etoiles)! !

Both of those finishes are super impressive - Tower of London's for his closing kick (so glad they finally found his best distance!!) and Trois Etoiles's because the rest were never any threat. A great weekend for Lord Kanaloa!

I really liked this video clip.
Deirdre is going to be the first Japanese horse to race in Ireland.
Good luck and come home safe!

Her connections are happy with her effort.
It sounds like she will race on in Europe. :D

I'm glad she's staying to compete in Europe! I hope she gets extra bananas to prepare for her next race.

Yoshi Hashida, assistant trainer of Deirdre, commented;
"I'm so happy to have such a great mare, and also great days in Europe."

His lovely comments are here and I believe that Japanese fans are with him.
Deirdre had not necessarilly been a very top contender in Japan.
But now she has certainly captured our hearts.
Horses can travel.
And we love horses who travel.

She ran a great race. I am a big fan of Oisin Murphy, but he held her up for an awfully long time behind a wall of horses, by the time he pulled her out and got rolling, it was too late. Not sure she could have beat Magical in a fight, but she could have been 2nd.

Hopefully Champion Stakes is next?

That's the racing!
Oisin should not be blamed.
He gave Deirdre a perfect ride in the Nassau Stakes last time out finding a room beautifully at the rail.
He might have tried to do the same but there was no racing luck today.
I hope he will retain her mount.

As for her next strat, my guess is that it will be either the Champion Stakes or the Prix de l'Opera if she stays in Europe as she is a 10F horse.

I don't know if I've already said this, but I will say it again. Thank you tachyon and lurky because this topic is ONE of the main reasons I joined this forum. I love the photos, just everything
