Promises Fulfilled is an anomaly. Yes he’s a sprinter but he earned enough points by winning that two-turn prep at Gulfstream when Good Magic wasn’t cranked. The points system is keeping the cheap speed out. Horses like Shecky Green, Groovy, Trippi, etc. had no real business trying to get 10f on the 1st Saturday of May of their 3yo year. I hate the point system but I do think that the pace scenarios that have come as a residual are more fair.

It is more fair. And it's way too soon to know if the points system is truly changing the race.

It's just interesting that literally changing the basis for entry isn't talked about at all in terms of keeping the TC sacred.

General Eclipse notes from DRF.
https://www.drf.com/top-news/justify-fa ... tle-455901

A total of 249 voters out of a possible 271 cast ballots. 22 failed to submit, shame.

The black-tie optional ceremony begins at 8 p.m. Eastern Thursday and will be emceed for the seventh time by Jeannine Edwards.
It will be livestreamed at DRF.com, and also is available through TVG, RTN, NTRA.com, XBTV.com, and GulfstreamPark.com.

Some winners have already been announced, e.g. Barbara Livingston will receive her 4th Trophy for photography. (only 4?)
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

From the Los Angeles Times.......

The votes are in for our Horse of the Year poll and the clear winner is Justify. Thanks to all of you who voted in our first poll. Many more to come but I promise not to inundate you with them. There were 626 votes cast and here’s how it turned out:

Justify 59.6%

Accelerate 35.3%

Monomoy Girl 5.1%
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

I know this isn't about all Eclipse awards but why is Gun Runner nominated for Older Male?

He technically ran once and the voters do strange things. It is best not to think of these awards at all, and I used to duke arguments about them out with the best of them. I imagine thinking about them is a leading cause of lost sanity.

There is an insistence on three nominees no matter how little sense it might make. How is it any horse is nominated for 3yo male besides Justify?

so if we get a TC winner, what the racing world is telling me is that the rest of the year is completely invalid outside of divisional honours. sounds good, means everyone can have an easy year.

i hope the HoF manager was serious when he said he didn't think justify would qualify.

Serious, perhaps. In touch with reality...........not so much.

Congratulations on the sport for getting this correct. It was the single greatest litmus test in the 50 years I have followed this sport.

In fact, there would have been little reason to continue to follow thoroughbred racing if this decision had been butchered. That's the way I looked at it.

It would have been a clear indication of simply too much screwed up thinking going on. Sometimes the obvious public choice is the correct choice.

I'm a little bit shocked that the 72 votes cast here were so wrong, 49/23 in favor of Accelerate.

Is that similar to betting with your heart instead of your head?

Funny...I feel the same way, but not about the horses. I think the record of certain humans involved makes me disgusted with TB racing, in particular regarding the individual with the initials BB whose record with drugs and equine deaths makes it impossible for me to trust anything done on the track by the horses in his care. It's for this reason, and this alone, that I could not support Justify's HOY. Not that it matters, since I'm a "little guy" who will never be in a position to influence the powers that be in this industry.
