Am following a Blame horse named Blame The Makers that is running today at Tampa Bay Downs. Think he has a very bright future. Noticed FOUR horses entered said Scratch-Veterinarian. Is it odd for four horses in one race to be scratched by a veterinarian or is a veterinarian scratch used by tracks to shrink field size. This was originally a 14 horse field going 6.5F at Tampa. What causes veterinarian scratches?

It could be a number of reasons:
Lameness
Unlevel movement
Injuries in the walking ring / saddling enclosure
Injuries at the starting gate
Horses getting kicked
Cuts or abrasions that the vet isn’t happy for the horse to race with
I’ve seen horses scratched because they’re bit their tongue on the way to the start and have quite a bit of blood around their mouth

Also things like very high temperatures, colic could be scratched by a vet prior to racing. Trainers can also scratch due to high temperatures as well.

I’m sure there are more but that’s all I can think of now.

Thank you. Just thought it was odd 4 veterinarian scratches from the same race the morning of a race. Guess I always think lameness when there are many other reasons.

Pretty sure you can erase this from the list of possibilities, ever.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.
