JULY 23, 2019–According to an unnamed industry source, there appears to be a salary dump going on at Daily Racing Form with some very prominent names reportedly on the chopping block.

None of this has been officially confirmed but rumored to be on their way out is Executive Columnist Jay Hovdey, National Handicapper Mike Watchmaker, handicapper, podcast host on network TV contributing analyst Matt Bernier, handicapping analyst Byron King, and an editor to be named later.
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Sad if true, but I haven't bought the full print edition of the Form for a few years now and only read the few articles online that are available through the free basic registration with the website. As a strictly recreational horseplayer, I find the past performances in the $6.50 Daily Racing Program sufficient (and plentiful) and don't see the value in plunking down $4 more for slightly more detailed PPs from far fewer tracks along with news, features and columns.

As good as the coverage in the Form is, it's a very common sight at racetracks to see DRF news sections either tossed aside or used as seat markers. Hard to justify paying writers to pump out items that so many of the people who buy the paper will never read, even by chance.

Not his best piece, ever, but I always really enjoyed Jay Hovdey's writing.

I'm happy to see that Matt Bernier has found a spot with the NBCSN team.
NBC Sports' coverage of the Whitney will be hosted by Ahmed Fareed, who will be joined by analysts Randy Moss and Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey, reporter Laffit Pincay III and reporter/handicapper Matt Bernier.

Today I learned that there's racing in Wales.
