12 yo g Trelawny finished third in his 2019 debut (Waiver Claiming) yesterday at EMD. Looks like neither horse nor trainer are ready to hang up their racing shoes. Bob also had two other runners on the card and I didn't get the opportunity to speak to him.

Something not seen too often is a 10yo making the first start of a racing career. Such is the case with 10yo m Effingham (Six Below - Easton, by Lil E. Tee) at
Fonner Park this Saturday (5/4/19) in Race 2. She'll be trying to get a piece of that $5,400 purse. It's possible that her efforts may be overlooked by other equine events happening this Saturday . Good luck to Effingham!

Is she really that big of a ham, or is that one of those names that slipped by the Jockey Club?
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Good one, stark. I think, however, she's named after a town in Illinois. A bit less interesting.

Mighty 15yo Carrickboy (IRE) finished 3rd in the 6th at Willowdale today, an amateur apprentice timber race, but he and the rest of the field were distanced some 43 3/4 lengths (who counted?) by the 12yo Katnap (FR).

@Leopowellracing

Soi Phet is cooling out well from a less than ideal race @santaanitapark . The next couple of days will dictate his future at the racetrack... We will let him tell us what he is happy doing. Thank you

Soi Phet's career near the end

Image
Barbara D. Livingston -The 11-year-old Soi Phet, here with trainer Leonard Powell, may have one more start before being retired.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Soi Phet, the 11-year-old stakes winner, is on the verge of being retired.[/size]
Trainer Leonard Powell said Monday that Soi Phet may have one more start, in the $100,000 Bertrando Stakes for California-breds on June 29 at Los Alamitos, depending on how he trains in coming weeks.

Soi Phet finished sixth, beaten 13 lengths, in an optional claimer at a mile Friday at Santa Anita in his second start of the year. On April 27, Soi Phet finished seventh by 4 1/4 lengths in the Crystal Water Stakes for California-bred turf milers, a race he won in 2018.

Powell said Soi Phet’s enthusiasm for training will dictate plans.

“I’ll get him back on the track and galloping and I’ll see how his attitude is,” Powell said. “He will have no more than one more start and that will be his last start.”

Ok, he runs 6th in an optional claimer and you kinda know he’s done - why try a stakes?

Because he's probably the best horse you ever trained, and it is so hard to let the dream go.

Yep. One last hurrah on the big stage for Soi Phet. Better to take your finals bows on the Carnegie Hall stage, and not at some high school auditorium. Just stay safe old man...

And IIRC, Soi Phet likes the Los Al track, so that might be a race he will do well in. Gives him a chance to go out a winner.

Triple Point wasn't brought in from the AEs despite a couple of scratches from the main body of the race. Artland finished last.

Talk about monster pedigrees. Asbaad finished second for the infamous Burton K. Sipp. He's a Shadwell Kentucky-bred by Street Cry - Lear's Princess by Lear Fan! Kieran McLaughlin's Shadwell duds often find their way into the Sipp barn, for some reason.
