A good number of 10+ year olds have paid the price in 2019, and we'll have a list of names at the end of the year. And with that, my contributions to the War Horse Chronicles will likely conclude.

I know it's a lot of work to keep up with these warriors for so long, as well as the emotional toll at times, but I'll miss these posts. Many of these horses would not come to our attention in any other way. So thank you for giving them the spotlight and honoring their efforts in this very public way.

WarBiscuit, I sent you a PM, but I’m not sure if you get them. I hope you are ok, and I will miss your posts terribly. I kept watching for this week’s post, hoping everything was alright. Thank you for all the hard work you do.

Ditto, but I understand the emotional cost. Loved seeing the warriors get their due!
I ran marathons. I saw the Taj Mahal by Moonlight. I drove Highway 1 in a convertible. I petted Zenyatta.

13yo Pacific Tsunami won a waiver claimer at Marquis Downs today. I'm sure the 10-lb bug helped :D

I second this. I'll sure miss the weekly lists of old-timers, if only for the bittersweet experience of sorting through their past lives, so to speak, on Equibase. I know that horses don't feel the same things human beings do when they're told they're not good enough to do the job in the big leagues (of sports or business or any other line of work) anymore and drift every downward through humbling jobs that pay less and less. But it's hard to remember that when you see stakes races at Lone Star or maiden specials at Belmont in the records of aged warriors running at Marquis Downs or Rillito. Thanks for all you've contributed!

Muchos Besos, one of the most popular and successful claiming horses ever to run at Santa Anita, has been retired at the ripe old age of 10.

“He was sound, but a group of racing officials felt it was time for him to retire,” said Javier Jose Sierra, who trained the Kentucky-bred son of Macho Uno for Hugo Catalan. “But he was 100 percent sound.”

Winner of 12 of 79 career starts, 10 of 46 at Santa Anita where he also had six seconds, 11 thirds and earnings of $242,636, Muchos Besos (“many kisses” in Spanish) ran third in his final race on June 29 at Los Alamitos.

The gray gelding made his first start on Sept. 2, 2011. Overall, he earned $335,236.

Sierra, who trained Muchos Besos for six years, winning six races, said he was purchased privately for $15,000 and turned out at the buyer’s home in Rancho Santa Fe. “The gentleman has three horses there, but they aren’t ridden or worked,” Sierra said. “He puts the horses on trails, so Muchos Besos should retire in comfort.”
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Just a brief mention of a couple of War Horses that were followed on these pages who, unfortunately, have recently expired.

California race fans may remember 10yo g Eagle Screams, who raced primarily in northern Cal, but on occasion appeared at Santa Anita, as well. At 10, he was still visiting the winners circle at various tracks, but his career came to a sudden conclusion at Golden Gate during training on Sept. 14 - reported as a "sudden death" incident. He'll be missed by many fans.

Eagle Screams (Redattore - Dreamy Jeanie, by Free House). 80 - 16-22-16, $549,784. MSP. Final race, 2nd at Golden Gate (8/23/19).
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

At the other end of the spectrum was 10yo g Oceanico, a horse that struggled for much of his career (exclusively at Camarero). I had been paying extra attention to him this year as he had not been doing particularly well, and holding my breath every time I checked a chart following a race - hoping that he was able to compete. This year alone, he raced 14 times earning a grand total for the year of $120. Pretty much raced right into the ground. I'm fairly certain that as this post fades away into past pages and beyond, the memory of Oceanico will too. May sound silly to the hardcore handicappers and bettors, but I'll remember him - for as long as I can. His only claim to fame may be his dam sire - the great Housebuster.

Oceanico (Bugatti Reef - Oh Mr. Postman, by Housebuster). 99 - 8-5-8, $42,424. Final race, DNF at Camarero (8/1/19). "broke down".

I've noticed this is a common thing with Camarero. There's so many brought back from there with over 130 races with few wins.
