I wonder what's up with that claim of 11-y-o Jonny's Choice. Owner/trainer Beverly J. Hamilton put in the claim at Turf Paradise about a week ago, yet Equibase shows her last sending out a starter in 2018 at Portland Meadows. Strange that she'd be claiming such a horse to restart her racing career. Maybe claiming to retire?

Fun fact: That TuP race was written for 9-year-olds and up! They used to run those at old Lincoln Downs in Rhode Island in the '70s.
Jonny's Choice is entered in Race 1 at Turf Paradise this Sunday (2/16) under Beverly Hamilton, so apparently she's back in business. Must have a soft spot for Jonny. Best of luck to the both of them!

He's entered again at Turf Paradise this coming Wednesday (2/26) in Race 7 - $8,500 claimer - running against another War Horse, Dreamcatcher(Tapit) - one of the better seniors on the track. I realize that he's 11 now, but he did have an extraordinarily good season as a 10yo (13 races and hit the board in all but one) and my guess is that she keeps him going for a while - just throws that last race out and sees if he can have a rejuvenation of the sap.

Some will remember from this thread a War Horse mare by the name of Dark Desire (Chief Seattle), a New York bred who began her career at Presque Isle Downs and Finger Lakes, and eventually made the move to Camarero. She last raced in early 2019, and then was left in a state of neglect. Fortunately, the now 12yo has landed in the care of the tremendous people at Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare, however, she has suffered great physical and mental damage as a result of this neglect. If you venture to the CTA facebook page and take a look at this old soul who eats laying down, and the condition of those terrible looking ankles, you will understand why they could use donations, however small, to give her a chance at some sort of recovery - which is not guaranteed. She surely deserves better than the hand dealt to her here.

Thanks beyond measure to CTA and all of the people that care about these horses. While looking at my database of War Horses for this thread over the past many years, I can't help but wonder about all of those that were used up and then vanished. Many of them suffered, I'm quite sure. To not do whatever we can to help as many as we can is simply unconscionable - in my ever so humble opinion.

Can't help but notice how popular it is among the folks at Camarero to run horses every week or every other week even though they never finish better than sixth.

Why?

She last ran as a 10yo in 2018, but was brought back for another try at 12. RIP.

I see the same sort of thing when looking through the South American past performances that show up in the Daily Racing Program occasionally. Seven- and eight-year-olds with well over 100 races only a week or two apart, lots of nothing results with a smattering of firsts and seconds. Maybe there's some sort of money awarded just for entering and finishing a race that makes a difference in places like Peru, where the usual purse is between $2,000 and $4,000 in US dollars. Like bullfighting and cockfighting, I guess we just have to chalk it up to "cultural differences."

I feel like some trainers may feel workouts are pointless and that the horse could get the same out of a race. So they may not be entered to actually be competitive but are entered to workout or maybe just fill a race.

That's how most Thoroughbreds were ran in the US back in the day. Standardbreds and greyhounds are still like that for the most part.

Wasn't there a former harness trainer who got some pushback for racing his TBs too often? Blanking on the name right now.

I personally don't see anything wrong with it. Its little difference than working the horse out every week. Also I think people don't realize we have horses that make a lot of starts in the US because they are claimers. Looking at the horses with the most starts in 2019, there were around 150 horses that made 20+ starts, and 1200 that made 16+ starts(these numbers include PR horses, but the ones with the absolute most starts were almost all claimers in the US).
