Wait, so thoroughbreds can run in QH and TB races?
Yes, the races are usually 870 yards. Los Alamitos cards them quite often and has for years. One of my OTTB’s, Anniversary Year, ran in a couple of them in the early 2000’s.

TBs can do quite well against QHs in those 870s (basically four furlongs). Some TBs just love to run flat out for that distance and very often catch the QHs (who usually win the break and the first two furlongs) in the stretch. 8-)

Turf Paradise occasionally cards races at 1,000 yards for "thoroughbreds, quarter horses, Appaloosas and paints." I don't think I've ever seen an Appy in any of them, though. I remember the California fairs running Appy races until about 20 years ago, when they suddenly were dropped, i'd imagine due to a lack of Appys being used for racing.

Second part of a DRF article:

Soi Phet’s future unclear
The 11-year-old stakes winner Soi Phet resumed racetrack activity with trainer Leonard Powell at Santa Anita earlier this month.

A winner of 15 of 61 starts and $1,022,864, Soi Phet has not raced since a sixth-place finish in the E.B. Johnston Stakes for California-bred milers at Los Alamitos last September. Earlier in 2018, the popular gelding won consecutive starts against Cal-breds in the Crystal Water Stakes on turf at Santa Anita at 47-1, and the Bertrando Stakes on dirt at Los Alamitos.

Powell said Soi Phet has been galloping for a week. He said Soi Phet will have a limited campaign this year or will be retired.

Owned by a partnership that includes Powell’s family, Soi Phet had five starts as a 9-year-old in 2017 and six starts last year.

Are all these horses retired to safe homes? Know about Bank of Dad (at Old Friends), but how about the rest?

Little B Rosson raced over 100 times and earned over half a mil. Calvin Borel rode her in the past.

Also, Tacky Angel, Fire Ridge, Fourth Top, Crimson Comic? Anyone know where they went?
Thanks!

Owner/trainer who races in Portland and on the fair circuit, familiar story. After all these years, it still amazes me how impossible it is to get info about horses in these situations. I couldn't even get info about a former WA juvenile champ out of a Broodmare of the Year who went down in a race Prineville, Oregon. I used every card I had and nobody was talking.

All I could find out about I'lbeamonkeysuncle is that the track announcer said he fell (on Twitter). When I hear that, I'd say there's a 99.9% chance he's gone.

Welcome to the board, Faith.

Those who specialize in retiring thoroughbreds from the track do their very best to ensure good homes for their horses. Some require contracts, do welfare checks, etc. Even the very best can't guarantee they will have safe homes forever, because there are bad people in the world.

There's a Search feature for the Board located in the Quick Links up in the left corner of the forum. If you search on a horse's name, some will have info about who/where retired them.

Hello Faith, and welcome to TBC! All of the above horses were mentioned in this thread during their racing careers and are listed here due mostly to old age required retirement. White Post, Worthy of Wings, Crypto Gulch, Bank of Dad, and Winning Worth are all positively safe, and feelers are out for the others. Thankfully, there are many eyes on the horses that show up here - although tracking every one of them can be frustrating, and it often requires much detective work! But we have many good agents here, and finding soft landings and keeping track of as many of the geriatric runners as we can was one of the reasons we started this thread - several seasons ago now. Please feel free to contribute any information concerning the whereabouts of these old timers whenever possible! Thanks for your post.

Didn't see anything in the chart about falling, so it makes things even more cryptic. "Eased back, pulled up, vanned off" leaves a glimmer of hope, but the "went wrong" part - and hearing of a fall now - doesn't sound promising. One can hope for the old guy though...

Hope never dies completely. I still keep the horse I've been asking about in my Virtual Stable...just in case...and it's been a year and a half. Cheers to hope!

Glancing back through some of the 2018 posts, I noted a few familiar names. Our newest member to the forum, Faith, has Dorothy’s Diamond retired to her farm, and another one of the ladies in our little group was able to obtain and retire Sons of Missouri and he’s at a small rescue enjoying retirement!

Especially happy to hear that Dorothy's Diamond has found a good retirement. That horse is extremely lucky to even be around, as he was an unwilling participant in the great Penn National "wreck" back in December of 2011. Half the field went down, including DD, and only two finished the race. Some of the horses continued their careers for awhile, but none as long as Dorothy's Diamond. Hope he, and Sons of Missouri have long healthy and happy retirements.

Yes indeed, War Biscuit! Because of you- I remember seeing that he had been involved in that- so when we heard Faith had gotten him- I screenshot that chart and sent it to our group. And then to race on as long as he did, amazing. if only that horse could talk, I would love to know what he would say.

Gallant Gray Warhorse Praetereo Easing into Career as OTTB
Praetereo proved to be fast during his racing career, winning 11 of his 82 starts – including a stakes race – and finishing on the board 29 other times. But the speed at which Sharon Potter adopted him from ReRun may have been even faster than any of his races.

Potter already had an off-track Thoroughbred from ReRun named Kettle’s On, but wanted a gray to join the son of Giant’s Causeway. While visiting ReRun’s website, she found the perfect horse in warhorse (a horse who has made 50 or more starts) Praetereo.

“I’d been really wanting a gray as well, which Lisa [Molloy] at ReRun knew, and I follow ReRun on Facebook,” she said. “By chance, I just happened to be goofing off on Facebook on my lunch break and Lisa had just posted this tall, elegant gray gelding … and then I saw he was also a son of Giant’s Causeway, and I just knew he was meant to be mine. I contacted Lisa in about three seconds, asked for a short jog video … and a few minutes later, he was mine! Fastest adoption ever.”
