Terrible news: Wicklow Brave fell at the last fence in the American Grand National at Far Hills. He fractured his shoulder and was euthanized. His amazing record from the Racing Post:

“23 courses
8 Britain
12 Ireland
2 Australia
1 USA

16-57 success-rate
6-23 Flat
3-5 Bumpers
5-27 Hurdle
2-2 Chase

Group/Graded victories
Grade 3 County Handicap Hurdle, Cheltenham, 2015
Group 1 Irish St Leger, Curragh, 2016
Grade 1 Champion Hurdle, Punchestown, 2017
Grade 3 Brewery Novice Chase, 2019

Wicklow Brave has already broken through the €1 million barrier in prize-money. He has 16 wins from 57 starts on his CV and has finished second on eight other occasions. He has run in two Melbourne Cups, won an Irish St Leger and also landed the 2015 County Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.”

He was a 10yo son of Beat Hollow out of the Rainbow Quest mare Moraine. May he rest in peace. I can’t imagine how devastated his connections must be.

Ugh. Santa Anita made the news again today, as another breakdown/euthanization has added to the year's toll. :(
RIP Satchel Paige.

The Stronach Group: Satchel Paige’s Fatal Breakdown To Be Investigated
Satchel Paige, a three-year-old gelding, was humanely euthanized after the fifth race on Saturday, October 19th at Santa Anita Park. After being pulled up at the 3/8th pole, Satchel Paige was immediately evaluated by a team of on-track veterinarians, led by Santa Anita Park veterinarian Dr. Dana Stead, and transported in the equine ambulance. Dr. Stead observed that the horse had suffered an open fracture of his left front ankle and made the decision to humanely euthanize the gelding.
Jockey Ruben Fuentes was uninjured.

The article isn't completely clear about where his injury occurred, but I believe it was in Europe. :(

I hate to say it, but that family seemed to be cursed with the early deaths. May he RIP

Such horrible news. He was a good, sound, handsome racehorse, with a rare and royal pedigree. He would have been a welcome addition to the stallion ranks as an important son of the late Street Cry and Delta Princess, and a horse who raced well past his 3yo season.
Damn.

Imperialism died sometime in 2019, I don't think anything was announced but it is beside his name on the Bloodhorse's Canadian leading sire list.

Well, crap. I was all set to take him out of my VS upon his retirement to stud. It just hurts to do it for this reason. They really do seem to have more than their share of early deaths. May God bless and protect Delta's Royalty!
