WinStar's Top Sire Pioneerof the Nile Dies at 13
WinStar Farm stallion Pioneerof the Nile died suddenly today, the farm announced. The 13-year-old son of Empire Maker —Star of Goshen, by Lord at War, bred a mare this morning and started acting uncomfortable once he was back in his stall. He was en route to the clinic when he died.

Pioneerof the Nile was a leading sire of his generation for the past three years, including the leading sixth-crop cumulative sire in every category: grade 1 winners, grade 1 performers, graded stakes winners, black type winners, and by earnings.

More to come.

I just came back from walking my dogs when the first thing that came up on my FB feed was this awful news. RIP Pioneerof the Nile, you were a brilliant ambassador for the breed.

Oh no, what a terrible loss. RIP, Pioneerof the Nile. Long-live your legacy!

Pioneerof the Nile dies at 13
Pioneerof the Nile, sire of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, died unexpectedly on Monday, WinStar Farm has announced. The son of Empire Maker was 13.

In a release, WinStar said that Pioneerof the Nile covered a mare on Monday morning, but began acting uncomfortably after he was back in his stall. He was en route to a veterinary clinic when he died.

“We are all extremely saddened by the loss of Pioneerof the Nile,” WinStar executive Elliott Walden said in the release. “He was a superior physical specimen, a Triple Crown sire, and a unique personality. All of us at WinStar are heartbroken.”

RIP Pioneerof the Nile... you were my Derby pick in 2009 and my 2nd favorite out of that crop (Musket Man!!).

At least he has a number of promising stallions in the shed to pass on the genes...

There was a terrible many car accident in CA and a semi rammed into the back of a horse trailer and killed one horse. Wonder if that was it. And was Water Cube the swimmers horse at one time, and named after the swimming facility in Beijing?

Catcher In The Rye, the runner-up behind Clodovil in the 2003 Poule d'Essai des Poulains who stood under the Coolmore banner for six seasons, died at Haras la Leyenda in Argentina on Monday at the age of 19.

Catcher In The Rye stood for five seasons at Castle Hyde Stud and an extra year at Coolmore Stud, before taking up permanent residence in Argentina, where he was crowned leading first-season sire and champion sire twice.

His notable progeny in the northern hemisphere includes first-crop daughter Rosenreihe, the German Oaks winner who went on to produce Deutsches Derby third Rosenpurpur, and second-crop son Ryehill Dreamer, a US Grade 2 winner formerly trained in Ireland by Fozzy Stack. His southern hemisphere offspring includes champion two- and three-year-old filly Catch The Mad and other multiple Group 1 winners in Argentina including Anaerobio, Flowing Rye and Rabid In The Rye.

Catcher In The Rye is also making his mark as a broodmare sire, with Never No More winning the Madrid Premier Handicap at the Curragh on Sunday.
