I see that the riders died as a result of rotational falls, something that happens all too often in eventing. I thought that those inflatable vests (they work like a car airbag) were supposed to protect riders from serious falls, even rotational ones. But I can't tell from looking at Winter's photo if he was wearing one, and there was not of pic of McDonald out on the cross-country course.
If either...or both...of those riders were NOT wearing the vest, shame on the organizers of the events.
Winter was; I don't know about McDonald.

Sad news in any case.

Benjamin was wearing a protection vest and a helmet. He fall on his face and got a skull-trauma and injured his neck.

Rest in peace Benjamin.

Terrible news about a really nice filly. Fortunately for Rosie, her clavicle was not broken...still, she's going to be out 4 to 6 weeks, and will miss her ride on Untapable in the June 28 Mother Goose.

RIP Socialbug. :( How frustrating, neither the DRF or BH articles thought to mention that she was a half to Midnight Lute.

Another one that was at one time listed on Canter (Canter California that is). Google still pulls up a photo though the listing itself is gone. RIP, handsome boy.

RIP to all those listed, but I'm especially sorry to see Point Taken's name there. The son of Point Given was a real New York warrior.

Very sad to hear about Point Taken, septic arthritis sounds painful. I'd followed him for awhile--he had 16 starts last year alone, and was competitive at the level. 29 starts, 8 wins, 7 seconds, 2 thirds.

From Showjumper McLain Ward's facebook page:

With a very heavy heart I have to share that 'Sara' has passed away this morning due to complications from colic. Our entire Castle Hill family and every person she has touched has lost a great friend. Thank you Sara not just for all the dreams you made come true but simply for being who you were. You always will be my champion in every way. God speed good friend."

How sad. What an awesome jumper she was. I'm sorry she didn't get to enjoy retirement for very long.

Point Taken RIP !

Lot's of red flags . Not pointing to Toscano here . He never raced the horse .
He was prior claimed for 62,500 . A month later brought back for 35,000
when Toscano claimed him , It was a last place finish and he never raced again .
Made some money for a few and had little rest . Shame on someone!
