Desormeaux becomes 19th jockey with 6,000 wins in North America
Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux joined an elite group of riders on Sunday, winning his 6,000th race in North America aboard X S Gold in the first race at Santa Anita.

Desormeaux, 48, reached the milestone win in dramatic fashion. Sent off favored, X S Gold ($7.20) closed from eighth in a field of 10 to win by a head over Madaket Sunset.

Desormeaux was honored in the winner’s circle with a brief photo ceremony and interview. It had to be quick. Desormeaux had to hurry back to the jockeys’ room to prepare for the second race, where he finished third on Baby Ice.

Darren Weir's stables raided
The stables of Australia’s leading trainer Darren Weir were raided by police and stewards on Wednesday morning.

Detectives from the Victoria Police Sports Integrity Unit raided both the Warrnambool and Ballarat bases of Weir’s large training operation.

Racing.com understands a video from inside the stable and other allegations surrounding Weir have been under investigation for months.

If he was put in federal prison for 10 years for something like manslaughter, wouldn't he be out by now on good behavior, good attorney, good judge, whatever.
Don't most get out at about the 8 year mark for whatever crime?
I've found it easier to tear up tickets at 8/1 instead of 8/5.

Cervical fusion. The injury is why he quit riding.

Over Flat or Fences, Jonathan Sheppard Wins Them All
There are few certainties in life or in the sport of horse racing. But just as you can count on the changing of the seasons, you can count on Jonathan Sheppard sending out winners by the dozen, year after year, in tests of both pure speed and dexterity over jumps.

Sheppard is patient, skilled, and a craftsman at the top of his trade. How else can you explain the fact that he won at least one race at the competitive Saratoga race meet every year from 1969 through 2015, an almost unfathomable streak of 47 years?

Update on spill from race 1. Jockey Romero Maragh reported to have broken two vertebrae and a punctured lung. Carlos Montalvo who also was unseated in race 1, suffered a hairline fracture in his right ankle. Heartfelt wishes to both for a speedy recovery.

Regarding that first race spill @GulfstreamPark. Jockey Romero Maragh has two fractured vertebrae and a punctured lung. Carlos Montalvo has a hairline fracture in his ankle. Both horses, Classic Act and Prospective Moment, are fine.

Watching the reckless riding that goes on at Gulfstream makes me sick. Its one of the worst, and It’s the same jockeys over and over again. I hope the stewards start giving proper suspensions and punishments, they’ve let this happen.

Perusing the Laurel Park entries, I noticed that King Leatherbury has been missing for a spell. A little quick research finds that he is taking some time off - along with his horses - and will be back later in the season.

Romero will have to do surgery to stabilize his thoracic spine. Most likely in the morning. It's a very difficult time for him and his family. Thanks for everyone reaching out. This is crucial situation hopefully it goes well.

Another terrible injury due to careless riding.
If I Were Racing Czar: If a jockey causes injury (or worse) to horse and/or rider due to his/her own reckless behavior, the penalties should be more than a slap-on-the-wrist fine and a few days suspension. A LOT more.

BTW: Isn't it time for a Jockey/Trainer News - 2019? :P

Trainer Darren Weir charged over jiggers
Champion Victorian trainer Darren Weir faces serious charges relating to electronic devices found in his stables at Ballarat and Warrnambool and Racing Victoria stewards have asked him to show cause why he should be allowed to continue his operation.

RV stewards issued the charges on Friday, two days after they and Victoria Police officers from the sports integrity unit raided his stables at Warrnambool and Ballarat.

His assistant, licensed trainer Jarrod Weir who runs the Warrnambool stable, have both been charged with possession of the devices, commonly known as jiggers, which are designed to give a horse an electric shock.

I’m guessing Assael Espinoza won’t be taking his talents to South Beach any time soon.
